John B has single-handedly created a new genre in Electrostep , and it would be criminal if he didn t go on to achieve a similar level of acclaim as Roni Size did at the 1997 Mercury Music Awards.

D&B has never been particularly noted for either a sense of humour or being too off the wall, so thank fuck for John B s Electrostep . Both tongue in cheek and irreverently innovative, Electrostep might sound like another newly imagined genre from the music journalist conveyer belt but it s actually one of the most refreshing, entertaining and exciting LPs garnered by the d&b scene all year. Expanding the visions he first flowered with 04 LP In:Transit , the make-up loving eccentric covers semi-satirical electro d&b wig-outs, glistening trance n bass, body-popping robo-funkers and the bubble-gum grunge of recent single Stalking You On Myspace . And a jump-up d&b overhaul of Hey Mickey . If only all d&b albums were like this 4.5/5

TOUCH MAGAZINE: John B looks like an 80s pop star. All pho-hekan and eyeliner, he s used this synthesized decade as his muse for Electrostep . On it he s let a drum n bass robot and a disco robot do the bare backed beast together and now we re invited to hear the Yamaha sparks fly. The 80s pop star Howard Jones collaborates on For You See Me (ah, now we know where blonde John got his image from) and porn star Marcy Meow adds to a cover of Tainted Love . And lest we forget the huge lead single Stalking You On MySpace , dedicated to the cool kids hobby de jour. But where s his rendition of Don t You Want Me Baby huh? 4/5

Electrostep , is varied, accessible, interesting, exciting & genre-bustingly electro-Robo-Tastic. John B's 7th album is more than just a collection of disposable, short-lived dumb dancefloor D&B tracks. Lots of clever, funny lyrics, robot vocals, wide-ranging musical styles, pioneering approaches to production, mainstream appeal but it s still underground, raw & refreshing. The influence of modern Electro, indie/rock & 80s synthpop is noticeable throughout, but is interpreted in a way that moulds perfectly with the power and energy of Drum & Bass to define a revolutionary new direction: soon to be widely known as 'ElectroStep'!

Collaborators include: 80′s superstar Howard Jones on 'For You See Me' -- a powerful blend of electropunk & DnB with a gorgeous vocal & breakdown/buildup. John B s Porn star friend Marcy Meow provides vocals on the 80s covers 'Tainted love' and 'Metro'. "We met in San Francisco -- she's done around 25 movies to date including Barely Legal and Bang Bros." Marcy has her own band Suicide Tuesday and is currently working in Vegas. John performed with her this year at the WMC in miami at the soho lounge. Other collaborators include Floridian Bands Fashionista & Iowatest , Soma-signed My Robot Friend , new UK act One Life Left and LA Electro-TrannySex-Masters Dirty Sanchez .

Following his widely appraised ‘Shadows and Silhouettes’ LP, Hugh Hardie’s latest offering is his most unique to date. During isolation, the Bristol-based producer set himself a challenge to write a new track from scratch every day for 7 days birthing the ‘7 Tunes In 7 Days’ project. For what would be a daunting process for many creatives, Hugh explained that the time limit “made it impossible to procrastinate or overthink decisions” - allowing his ideas to come to fruition more fluidly. Continuing to showcase his sonic diversity, ‘7 Tunes In 7 Days’ is home to soulful liquid funk, sub-heavy new wave jungle and minimal yet deep drum & bass bangers.

Setting the bar high from the offset, the week began with the creation of ‘Back & Forth’ which sees melancholic arpeggios and captivating pad hits rest delicately above signature rolling breakbeats. The EP varies between old school jungle influences on ‘Klaxon’ and soothing vocal chops contrasting coherently with gated synths as that much-loved Hospital loungecore style shines through in Day 4’s ‘CNK’.

Teaming up with the acclaimed duo Pola & Bryson for Day 6, ‘Bending Light’ consists of elegant flourishes and heartfelt strings. For the final day, Hugh upped the challenge by deciding to not use any loops or samples, instead making use of his hardware synths and microphone to record the purrs and meows of his cat Gretchen to create pads and a bass line for the aptly titled, ‘Gretchen Bass’. This techy stepper is a perfect round off to a successful week of music-making. As Hugh said himself - “Sometimes all you need is a microphone and a cat”.

Hugh Hardie’s ‘7 Tunes In 7 Days’ project displays the versatility of his production and creative ability. Making the most of his time in isolation, Hugh attempted to demonstrate the numerous benefits of staying at home during these difficult times, when the world needs music more than ever.

The annual summer album from the south-London based imprint provides a soundtrack for a time in our lives that has changed every one of us. From their homes to yours, their weekly virtual parties have allowed us to come together under the shared love for 174 beats per minute.

The album is packed with 32 brand new original tracks, collaborations and remixes to make sure that good vibes and even better music are in plentiful supply, featuring the likes of Camo & Krooked, Flava D, London Elektricity, S.P.Y, Kings Of The Rollers, Degs, Logistics and Makoto, seamlessly blended together by Nu:Tone on the continuous mix.

Delivering everything you’d expect plus more, Urbandawn’s ‘Carnival Blues’ is a nod to his eclectic musical background.The Sao Paulo-based sonic architect canvasses vibrations from around the world into an untestable drum & bass cruncher. Villem sets the compilation in motion with ‘We Had A Song’ ft Leo Wood, a 2020 cover of a classic by the progressive contemporary icons The Roots - “You Got Me”. Villem infuses drum & bass with neo soul and hip hop to create a sublime liquid bouncer drenched in moreish guitar riffs and comforting strings.

His first release since his seventh studio album, Hospital head-honcho London Elektricity has teamed up again with the Stockholm-based Bulgarian Goddess, providing stunning orchestral sounds in ‘Someone Once Gave Me A Melody’. Camo & Krooked meet Pola & Bryson on their official remix of ‘Turn Up (The Music)’. Incorporating the anthemic synth and vocal leads from the original, brisk breaks and growling basses flip the tune on its head turning it into a sub-heavy summer striker.

Embarking on an interplanetary journey through bass-ridden black holes, powerhouse trio Kings Of The Rollers have stepped up with ‘Saturn’s Strings’, plus ‘The Prophet’ which marks Voltage’s first solo release on Hospital Records. The compilation also sees an exciting release from dance music duo My Nu Leng as they join forces with Dread MC on ‘Worldwide’, a tearout destroyer that draws for system shaking basslines.

Whilst they won’t be able to unite the Hospital family and wider drum & bass community this summer, Hospital Records and Hospitality continue to supply the highest calibre of music, no matter what the circumstances.

Formerly under the name AMP3RIAL, I'm a die-hard Drum & Bass fan/DJ/Producer. I was first turned on to DnB in 1997 and had already been dabbling in music creation, so from 97 - 2002 or so I spent my weekends bouncing to and from any club (and until dawn any rave lol) that would let the sonic boom of Drum & Bass be played, which in the late 90's/early 2000's Detroit was a VERY polarized (pretty much still is) Techno/House hub... Though since about 2001/2002 I finally started building my home studio and since then I've dedicated myself to the craft of DnB production. I'll get back on the live decks soon and shock everyone in tha D ;)
