The Bunker Podcast 131: Justin Cudmore

We are honored to release 'Dualism', the sophomore E.P. from contemporary Montreal-based duo, Solitary Dancer. They released an eponymously titled debut E.P. on Midland's label Graded in late 2016 after their track ‘Desire & Apathy’ was featured in his Essential Mix. They are known for their elegant, richly-sculpted sound design and knack for propulsive club rhythms that eschew rigid 4/4 drum patterns.

‘Dualism’ opens with “Anything”, equal parts Drexciya and Dopplereffekt — full of low-end bass stabs, blipping synths; swelling and washing to a cinematic close. For the first time on a Solitary Dancer record, vocals make an appearance in the guise of a male companion who’s lamenting a lost lover. “Losing Touch” takes a classic electro beat, and through the use of elegiac pad washes, distorted bass and menacing vocals, morphs into persistently engaging shapes. The B-side's "Emails 2 Myself" is a suspenseful corralling of intriguing sonic elements. Its fractured 707 beats combine with melancholic strings and features vocals by Marie Davidson, another core member of Montreal's creative electronic scene. “I can’t turn off my brain”, she delivers with deadpan accuracy about head games in the age of computer communication, before harmonizing octaves into majestic elegance. Also included is the instrumental version of “Emails”, accentuating the bass drum, snare, hi-hat and melodic synth tones, sailing into the subdued evening sun of the future. 

All songs have been mastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The record is housed in a custom made jacket designed by Eloise Leigh, featuring photographs by Scott Pilgrim, which explores themes of duality— an individual looking into a mirror, conjuring the image of a mannequin. A juxtaposition highlighting the ideal as the female self. Each copy includes a double-sided postcard with notes.

Dark Entries and Emotional Rescue team up to further explore Psychic TV’s Acid House years. Psychic TV was formed by Genesis P-Orridge and Peter Christopherson of Throbbing Gristle with Alex Fergusson of Alternative TV in 1981. After various line up changes, the band shifted direction to dance oriented songs influenced by the House and Techno scenes of Detroit and Chicago. By 1988 the group included Dave Ball of Soft Cell, Fred Giannelli of Turning Shrines and Matthew Best of Carcrash International. During the summer of 1988 the group recorded a batch of songs at Time Square Studios in London that would appear under the guise of various artists compilations Jack The Tab’ and ‘Tekno Acid Beat’. The idea behind these ‘compilations' of imaginary artists was creating a sense that a healthy acid house scene existed in the UK.

Virginia was the studio project of Dave “Mista Luv” Ball and then-wife Virginia “Gini” Ball, a classical violinist who toured and recorded with Siouxsie and the Banshees and Marc Almond. The duo had previous collaborated on Dave’s solo album ‘In Strict Tempo’ in 1983 and with the group Other People in 1984. The name "Blue Pyramid" was inspired by a photograph from Pink Floyd's album ‘Dark Side of The Moon’. Also at the time Dave was taking quite a lot of acid and came across some stuff ironically called "Blue Pyramid". Gini’s violin has an arabic feel, adding to the already bright and hypnotic dance rhythms. For this reissue we’ve backed the A-side with a remix from Bucharest DJ and producer duo Khidja who add more acoustic instrumentation for a world-beat psych-out. On the flip is San Francisco analog wizard Bézier who ups the tempo for some late-night peak NRG. The final remix comes from San Francisco producer and engineer Mark Pistel of Consolidated, Hercules & Love Affair, and Meat Beat Manifesto, who offers a slice of non-stop ecstatic dancing. All songs have been mastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The 12” is housed in a trippy, majorelle blue and purple die-cut sleeve with classic yellow Psychic TV skull label, all designed by Eloise Leigh. Each copy also includes a 2-sided 6x6” square insert with a photograph by Fred Giannelli of the Emax disc for Blue Pyramid, and liner notes by Dave and Gini Ball.

The sound of someone slamming a door startles my hand just as I was going to draw on my right eyebrow. Interruptions NEVER happen doing my first side, but fate will have it applying the twin is ALWAYS an issue. It never gets any easier does it? The more times you do it, the quicker you get, the more confident the stroke, that split second before you put the needle to the record, time always stops. It's in this psychic space, the moment before the liquid liner tip hits those freshly opened pores that everything can fall apart. And guess what? Today I am not gonna do it. The pencil just loomed there, my face falsely lit younger by my vanity mirror. I look into my own eyes, caught in time. I lean back, the sound of Casio RZ-1 snares filling me with courage to do something crazy. The first line is never expected to be perfect, it doesn't have to conform. Unbalanced? Maybe. It doesn't have to speak to anyone and seems to hold greater power alone than with a partner. Besides, some days this is warpaint, nothing else. These streets might be full of people playing a part they didn't memorize the lines for, but not me. I am out here, headphones on, scars and blush, hyphenating names to match my transmutations. Yesterday was a slight curl on both ends, like the sharp tip of a decorative blade. Yesterday, I could have drawn blood if I needed to. Today I just say a one sided fuck you.
