Partial Press Release: The 43rd release on microCastle welcomes Brian Cid back to the label for a brand new EP. The NYC based artist has enjoyed much success since his label debut in December of 2014. An EP on Hot Since 82's Knee Deep In Sound and a mini LP on Guy J's Lost & Found Records top his 2015 highlights, while 2016 holds even greater promise with a new project for Cityfox on the horizon. Over the last 12 months Brian's sound has taken on a life of its own, increasingly organic and deeply emotional, the US artist has further stretched his sonic boundaries, with luminaries such as Adriatique, Guy J, Hernan Cattaneo, Joris Voorn, Richie Hawtin and Thugfucker now play listing his music. His return to microCastle has been much anticipated and a quiet start to 2016 has only made his rapidly expanding fan base even hungrier for new material. Brian now presents his second EP for the Canadian imprint entitled 'Belles Du Shaman' alongside a remix from Eagles & Butterflies.

The release begins with the title track and finds Brian carving out one of his most distinctive grooves to date. Layered beats and mystical pads set the piece in motion before an underbelly of warm bass swells fully initiates the journey. Highlighted by soulful vocal stabs the first act strikes an emotive chord, foreshadowing a break of warm harmonies and cinematic tones, ultimately leading to a third act of timely drops and heart-warming rushes. It's one of Brian's most unique creations and not surprisingly it comes from a special place, as he describes "Belles Du Shaman is a musical story of pain & struggle as well as hope & light. The hard drums and synths set the tone for this deep, pulsating and melancholic EP, that drowns in a sea of sounds, touching every weak corner of my heart. When I wrote this track I had just visited the mountains of Utah, more than 10,000 feet up. In a night of music and stars I was moved by how powerful and meaningful a space in time can be. A land that provides us with water, food, shelter... it gives us life as well as meaning. Imagine losing this. How it can impact our life and culture as well as our history and being. The end result of all these feelings and realizations came out in this track."

trndmsk: What inspired you to produce the EP?

Fulltone: I got inspired to produce “C’est bon” during my last visit to Paris, "C’est bon" was one of the sentences I kept hearing while walking through the beautiful streets of Paris, surrounded by the beautiful architecture and history. When I got back to the studio I had an idea of making a track that would capture the vibes I was getting during my trip. 

The idea of “Mahe’” came to me during my trip to Seychelles and got inspired by the mesmerizing out of this world nature, Mahe’ is the name of the Capital of Seychelles and I wanted to make a music piece that breathes and reflects the beauty I was in during my trip. 

Where did you record it? And how?

The whole EP was recorded at my studio in Cairo using all my beloved gear! 

With "Mahe" I used a Charango (South American stringed instrument), a kalimba and a classical guitar for the main melodies, all recorded using an AKG C414 Mic and SSL preamp going to a universal audio Apollo interface. For the beats I used my Elektron analog rytm and some field recording I did with my iPhone. For the bass I went for my go to synth for bass the Moog sub37 and also used bass guitar for the baseline during the first part of the song. I remember also using a Gibson J45 acoustic guitar to play the main riff.

“C’est bon” I started with the groove and struggled for a while to find a nice hook for it, then one day my step sister was at the studio and she has a beautiful voice, I had an idea of recording some vocal pads playing the chords of the track, so we recorded each note of each chord of the whole chord progression and I still felt something was missing, so I tried a trick I had read about a while ago, I side-chained a gate on the vocal pads triggered by a programmed hihat pattern and instantly got that stuttering effect you hear on the vocals on the drop, the rest was all fine crafting to finalize the track.

How did you get in contact with the record label?

Klassified label owners (Julien and Thomas AKA Parallells) are very close friends of mine that I consider family. When we decided to release a Fulltone EP on their label I sent them some tracks but highlighted that C’est bon and Mahe were my favorites, they agreed and here we are now :)) EP is about to go out with fantastic remixes from Audiofly & Jonas Saalbach 

What’s up next after the release? Are you working on any other projects? 

I have a few releases in the pipe line, I have an EP coming out early next year on Keller Berlin with an amazing remix from Powel, a podcast for All Day I Dream, a remix for my dear friends ElMundo & PHCK coming out on Earthly Delights and finally a collab track with “a surprise” coming out on “another surprise”.
