Music I Made.

Around 2008, AMS was in grad school. 

2 years before, he met ESHR, who at the time, was strolling onto the campus of the University of Illinois as a freshman. 

They met at a member introduction for UC Hip-Hop Congress. 

AMS had been part of that crew for 6 years (since 2002). 

ESHR was interested in joining. 

They both rapped well. 

AMS felt a bit old. 

ESHR felt like he was working with an OG. 

And thus, Boombap Savant was born.

This was from an EP that we finished around 2008, and then lost track of. 

But, time has a wonderful way of reminding you of things you've made. Especially when you come across the DVD with the project files while cleaning house. 

This is our gift to you, in all of its unmastered and rough recording glory.

So, in yet another trip through the AMS WAYBACK MACHINE...

We've discovered another remix that got finished...but never got released!

Flomatiks (a DOPE producer from South Korea) and I went to college together. We had always talked about collaborating, but never had the chance.

And waaaaay back in 2011, as Natural (Influence) was shaping up, this was one of the first cuts I recorded. After sending the song out to a few producer buddies, he (Flomatiks) asked if he could remix it.

Of course, we couldn't say no.

He finished it, sent it along...and it got lost in the GMail shuffle.

Flash forward: we're cleaning our inbox a bit, and what do we find...still with the "unread" tag on it. Jeez.

Flomatiks turns Amiel and I's little journey into "why is AMS awake at 4 AM" into an INCREDIBLY lush, jazz-noir re-work.

Let's take a sec to think back.

In 2002, I had the distinct honor of linking up with UC Hip-Hop Congress as a freshman at Univ. of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. Rap was a talent that was of recent discovery, and was still opening itself up to me at a blinding pace.

2 weeks into being there, I had come to meet with a group of friends and mentors I've known ever since. Some of these people include the musical likes of DJ limbs​, Melodic Scribes, and DJ Bozak​.

And then, there was DJ SPINNERTY​.

Spinnerty was just beginning to "get his feet wet" in terms of making instrumentals, but had one of the most versatile yet distinguishable sounds I had ever heard from a producer.

On a random shot, he tossed me an instrumental with a tag line.

"Let me know what you think of this."

That winter, I rose from a bout of very deep sleep to write a song that carried he and I into a strange little local, turned national, turned international whirlwind.

It went from being a release on Green St. Records in Champaign.
To OM Discovery, vol. 1 in San Francisco.
Unto awards for "Best Hip-Hop Song" in local music magazines.
And then, to iTunes.
Onto playlists for college radio shows around the country.
And, into INTERNATIONAL hip-hop radio show playlists to this day.

Last night, on a hunch, I was unpacking some of the last boxes for my new apartment, and found my pile of rap notebooks extending as far back as my Sophomore year of high school.

As I was digging through them, I found it.

On a piece of well-beaten college rule from 2005, there it was. A bunch of notes, breath control marks, and chicken-scratched chatter from phone conversations under a scrawled title:

"AGENT MOS & SPINNERTY -- 'CITY LIFE' -- GREEN ST RECORDS, 2/17/2005"

"City Life" was the first of over 20 cuts that Spinnerty and I crafted together. He produced nearly ALL of "ILLuminate," we wrote and recorded "Amnesia Lane" during a visit I made to San Francisco in 2008, and our last collaboration, "Perhaps (the Itch)," brought two 5-year separated generations of UC Hip-Hop onto the same track.

But it all started here.
