Serene Dawn

Earth. A barren planet with no soil but half a meter thick radioactive hazard as your foothold. An interchange of nuclear warheads mutually assured destruction of life as we know it, simply just happened.

Blue planet? Heh, it's all brownish green now. That's atomic fallout diluted the water completely. I don't even recognize the water's liquid properties anymore. It's sticky, thick, slimey. I forgot what ordinary, natural water tastes like.

Several people in underground bunkers you say? Unless they have supplies for two decades, there's no way anyone could've made a living out of it. It's not worth it anymore that Earth lost its very own atmosphere. I don't have any idea what kind of madman would've triggered it, but Earth's current magnetosphere had rendered unstable; you'd not survive any solar flare burst when on the surface. Current Earth's basically a purgatory for any living organisms.

We're lucky for having made it to outer space colony. This is the last-known artificial satellite with humans in it. While not an inhabitable planet, at least this man-made satellite like ours could do its job. Yeah, foods and drinks around are synthetic. We somehow figured out a way to produce drinkable synthetic fluid similar to water.

Thing is, we've got no fuel nor adequate energy to move this vessel around. We're stuck here in the middle of space with no destination to a stationary planet we could call home. We just hope the utter lack of flybys. A slight hit of stray asteroid would literally wipe existence of humanity.

You'd think at least by living here we learned out lesson? Scratch that thought. 1/10 of our space ship is covered in radioactive substance. Geiger counter placed all over the neighboring sector. There was a greed kicked in to attempt producing energy, using nuclear. As if we're adequately equipped. Next thing you know, a whole sector went isolated... including its inhabitants. Due to the way our sector interconnects, we could hear hundreds of people coughing from the contaminated sector since then. Nobody knows how the heck they kept alive. Well, nobody bothers to figure out. 

Humanity exists only for the fortunate. It's a luxury nobody appreciates, until it's gone –a neglected privilege often goes unnoticed.
