Kölsch's bold decision to bring melody, riffs and colour back to techno – in a time when the vogue has been leaning more towards the industrial and dubbed-out once again – has paid off in a big way. Ever the visionary, KOMPAKT’s Michael Mayer signed him for the first of several releases on his Speicher imprint back in 2010, culminating in his stunning debut album 1977 last year. SOULMEEX sixth label release is finally here, delivering a luminous burst of dancefloor energy with The Velvet Dust EP by Faroese-Copenhagen artist Brynjolfur. Infused with Balearic dream house aesthetics, it unfolds as a three-track euphoric journey. Deeply cinematic yet built for the club.

The EP features Skyline Groove, Solstice Serenade, and Golden Circle, each offering a different facet of Brynjolfur distinctive sound. To complete the package, Portuguese-Italian producer Vhyce delivers a striking remix of Skyline Groove, adding his own personal touch.

The visual identity of the release is completed with artwork by Icelandic photographer Valtýr Daregard, adding an atmospheric layer to the record.

You may ask: "In the day and age of streaming playlists and the omnipresence of freely available mixes, what's the use of a label compilation?" The answer is simple: labels still serve as a dearly needed filter mechanism in this tsunami of music we're facing every day. Labels strive to establish trust between artists and listeners. They're like your favorite restaurant around the corner. On the spur of the moment, you might find more excitement in that hip place that just opened somewhere else. But when the novelty fades, you'll always return to your sanctuary. The safe place where they know your name and the last drink is on the house. KOMPAKT has become such a place for generations of fans and artists alike. And the TOTAL compilation series serves as its menu: always changing but instantly recognizable.

As per usual TOTAL is a collection of the past years biggest tunes, the creme de la creme of KOMPAKT's steady output of 12"s topped off with eight exclusive unreleased tracks that are also available on the 2LP vinyl edition of TOTAL 19.

Cologne young blood JULIAN STETTER nails the starry-eyed, romantic KOMPAKT signature sound with his remix for an up and coming local pop outfit called ALBERT LUXUS. Fellow Colonian JONATHAN KASPAR makes his label debut with his slinky track "Renard". DJ BALDUIN definitely is one to watch in 2020. His massive "E.W.B.A." transcends the friendly populism of an ancient Love Parade anthem while capturing the sincere spirit of today's electro revival. REX THE DOG's "Vortex" and TOM DEMAC's "Serenade" perfectly showcase why KOMPAKT is still one of the most played and charted labels in electronic music today. In a scene that is more fragmented than ever these two producers delivered true consensus hits that are cherished on all sizes and shapes of floors beyond genre boundaries.

The second half completely belongs to a whole new breed from our beloved SPEICHER series such as ANNA, YOTAM AVNI, EXTRAWELT, RAXON, BLACKRACHAS, JOHN MONKMAN and LA FLEUR alongside our full time members PATRICE BÄUMEL, KÖLSCH and GUI BORATTO. Not just a cute title, Cologne’s Kessler has dropped an absolute missile of an EP for his Pets debut right here. Four tracks of stone cold party denters, the lead track says it all: pure drum machine poetry, all jacking and soul-hacking, ‘Party Like You’re Not Alive’ could easily raise the dead. Just ahead of his second studio LP, ‘Eight Bit Ocean’, James Teej delivers the ‘Liking Your
Disorder’ single, backed with a remix from Timo Maas, for Sasha’s Last Night on Earth imprint.

Having first appeared on Last Night On Earth with the ‘Bring On The Night’ collaboration with Sasha, the prospect of a Teej LP on the label has been rumoured but before that, ‘Liking Your Disorder’ is here to whet the appetite.

Putting a modern and often highly musical slant on the classic punch of house music aesthetics, Teej never fails to deliver fresh sounding material and ‘Liking Your Disorder’ is no different. Fuelled by a 909 flavoured beat that is worked to the maximum without ever overreaching itself, ‘Liking Your Disorder’ throws an elastic synth riff around it’s concise 6 minute length with confidence. Never one to shy away from layering melodies
Teej playfully toys with secondary keys that range from the rhythmic to long held notes which result in an ever changing, densely emotive dancefloor cut.

Timo Maas’ version is very much a remix in the old school sense of the term – using the majority of Teej’s sounds and providing a new slant on them in a subtle and measured manner. Slow burning, increasingly rhythmic and with just the right amount of peaks and troughs, it’s a master class in arrangement.

James Teej’s ‘Liking Your Disorder’ is released on Last Night on Earth on April 8th with the LP, ‘Eight Bit Ocean’ following later that month
