Singer, songwriter and multi instrumentalist, Amy Studt has announced that she will release her eagerly awaited new album via the Crocodile Laboratories label on the 4th of October 2019.

 

‘Happiest Girl In The Universe’, recorded with Hatcham Social’s Toby Kidd, features eleven bold, intimate and heartfelt tracks including the acclaimed  singles  ‘Sleepwalker’ and ‘I Was Jesus In Your Veins’ together with the albums eponymous titled closer. Haunting cinematic pop that recalls the drama of the late Scott Walker, the new long player is a narrative diary of depression, hope and redemption and is without doubt one of the most personal and innovative collection of songs that is likely to surface this year.

Chapter 1 - I Was Jesus In Your Veins

I remember we took a lot of time recording this song, taking a lot of care over each element. It has taken many different shapes, with sections changing multiple times. It’s about music: when I write, play and sing is often the only time things makes sense. Everything comes together and seems wholly right. We got recycled  jars from the house and filled them with water, tuned them and played them as percussion. I had the sound of children at play in my mind and wanted to add that. It’s a reflection on my life and the choices I made both personally and professionally, and where I found myself in that moment. Again the backing vocals are speaking to me, reassuring me in a sense .

Chapter 2 -  Let The Music Play

Sleepwalker was written during the London riots. It’s about panic attacks, being lost in a city, madness both inside me and all around me. About when the high of mania crashes and the black of depression descends on you. But it’s also about finding someone and it being OK in that moment: being lost with somebody. There were ‘natural’ moments we enjoyed keeping in, like the sound of the room in the microphone; not over-editing to make everything perfect and melodined / autotuned like the rest of the record. Always mindful to keep the life, the reality and the breath in.

Chapter 3 - Sleepwalker

Singer, songwriter and multi instrumentalist, Amy Studt is set to release a new single ‘I Was Jesus in Your Veins’. It is the first track and chapter in a series of songs that will be released every six weeks and will ultimately make up the overall story / track listing on Amy’s eagerly awaited new album. A narrative diary of depression, hope and redemption, the new long player is a bold and intimate set of heartfelt songs and is set to arrive later this year.

One of the most innovative artists around, Studt delivers haunting cinematic pop that recalls the drama of Scott Walker and is creating some of the most beautiful and inspirational music in the UK right now.

A truly engaging live performer, Amy is set to play multiple dates throughout the year.

I think this may be the only song I didn’t record with Toby. I wrote it after a few overdose attempts and when I was finally placed in a psychiatric facility, which happened to have a piano in it, I wrote this song there during my recovery. Straight after Ieft hospital I flew back to New York and recorded it out there. It’s about isolation, being haunted by the past and the present, and being at the end. The “life in me” line was because when I made the last attempt I felt the life seeping out of me and out of the back door of my house up into the air and the night sky: that back door where I would sit and smoke and look at the night sky every night. I wanted to erase it all, everything that connected me to anyone. Every memory, every picture, and just disappear. It’s also about in that moment of finality: remembering the simplicity and beauty of the beginning of falling in love; feeling very alone and wishing you could go back and some kind of hope  pulls you back.

The Water is about creating a world with someone. About how we live in a world within worlds and how we can all create our own realities to some extent. By the people we surround ourselves with and the places we choose to be. The music we listen to, the films we watch and the things we allow to permeate our person. The verses are split between me and Toby. It talks about the ugliness in us as well as the strength and the beauty. But it’s also about being on the edge of madness as reality shifts; becomes bigger, smaller. I worked on the whole album with Finnigan Kidd, Toby’s brother on drums. And on the end section we asked that he just go for it. The drums have their own life that disregards the track itself in places. I am particularly in love with Toby’s guitar part in this one.
