The result of these four musicians’ encounter — outside their regular navigation of the relatively safe waters of new Music — is always an energetic explosion of fragmentary interlacings, an apparent chaos of improvisation, which has already been recorded on a studio LP.

Make You Stay is a cycle of eight experimental recitatives and instrumental pieces by cellist and composer Emily Wittbrodt. The compositions are based on baroque forms, transferred to the sound of a contemporary band (electronics, electric guitar, drums, cello, electric organ and chest organ). In terms of content, the cycle deals with forms of separation. In the four recitatives, texts of the 20th and 21st centuries were set to music: Poems by E.E. Cummings and Stine Sampers, fragments of lyrics by Astrud Gilberto and a text by Emily Wittbrodt herself. The four recitatives are each performed by one of the band members, so that all four musicians have a singing or speaking role.

All recitatives are followed by an "aria", without singing, purely instrumental: in this - according to the historical model - the content of the recitatives is musically processed and further spun.

The result is music that in a weird way may be reminiscent of early classical music due to its inner structure and the sound of the chest organ, but is clearly rooted in contemporary music. With the band consisting of Annie Bloch (vocals, electric organ, chest organ), Jan Philipp (vocals and drums), Wolfgang Pérez (vocals, electric guitar, electronics) and Emily Wittbrodt (voice, cello) active musicians of Germanys experimental pop and improvisation scene can be heard on the record.

Emily Wittbrodt - Foolish

The composer, percussionist and instrument builder Limpe Fuchs has spent six decades exploring the outer limits of sound and its effects on the listener. Born in Munich in 1941, Fuchs is part of a generation of German artists who sought radical new approaches to art, music and social organisation in the period following the Second World War.

Her piano album Alloa is out now.

The Duo Ludwig Wittbrodt, that‘s Emily Wittbrodt on cello and Edis Ludwig on laptop and drums. The two develop a thicket of sounds and melodies that absorbs us in a completely unpretentious way and fills us with associations and warmth. We are reminded of the achievements of both Krautrock and Neue Musik, of early electronic music as well as Drone and Ambient.

At first glance, Emily and Edis seem to be an unequal couple. She has an academic background as a cellist, he is self-taught with his main instrument being computer and programming. She is active in Free Jazz, he drums with the rock band Düsseldorf Düsterboys. On the other hand, both have been active in the Free Improv scene in the german Rhine-Ruhr region for years - for example in ensembles such as The Dorf or Hilde (Emily) and Nasssau or Transport (Edis).

Ludwig Wittbrodt - Tulpen

Taken from Tales From The Subterranean, the fifth solo album from saxophonist Julius Gabriel. Born out of new sounds and rhythms that the musician discovered during the pandemic, “Tales From The Subterranean” embodies a blend of primal energy and inventive exploration across twelve tracks. The opener “Time Riding” sets the mood, a tearing rhythm that sounds like a frenetic tap dance. It invites you to move and when you get to “Footworks” you are all set up, merging saxophone finger percussion with a continuous siren whisper emanating from the instrument, provoking euphoria, fear and satisfaction all at once. Moving on, you start to understand the sense of discovery behind the record and the needs Julius had, like to construct a saxophone with drone capabilities and closer to an idea of natural sound. “Hailing From The Mountains” has a meditative tone; “Westward At Sundown” feels like a ballad. Born from darkness yet radiating with newfound light, “Tales from the Subterranean“ stands as a testament to the resilience of artistic expression. It is primal music.

The modular synthesizer offers an inexhaustible variety of possible interconnections. Amongst gate and trigger, inbetween 0 and 5 volt, Kai Niggemann and Nils Quak did experiment with their instruments in may 2016 at Makroscope. This recording is a documentation of their individual approach to the modular sound. Kai played his Buchla 200e Electric Music Box, while Nils utilized a Eurorack Modular System, a Ciat Lonbarde Plumbutter as well as Native Instruments Reaktor. Kai Niggemann performed first, followed by Nils Quaks concert.

The artwork of the tape incorporates copy art by Gabriele Klages that arose from the Makroscope. The Makroscope in Mülheim an der Ruhr is a multidisciplinary hub for art and technology, as well as Ana Ott’s yearslong main venue for leftfield music.

Transport rushes through all sorts of unholy rituals and improvised excesses – from Tanz um den Melkeimer to the Ekelzentrum and on to the Traumbaum. A Space Odyssey without rules or certainties, apart from the filthy power of an uproar of etheric synthesizer washes and motoric drum pulses. On their Milchreise, they boldly stimulate cosmic regions of your brain that no band has stimulated before (probably apart from Amon Düül, Ash Ra Tempel and Boredoms).

Transport are Nils Herzogenrath (also known as Vomit Heat) and Niklas Wandt (drummer of countless improv adventures) – both are also members of the more or less well-known pop group Oracles – as well as Edis Ludwig, who also publishes music under the moniker Tesk. Transport is their thundering, whispering, grunting, squealing and buzzing gathering.

Phil is a experimental recording artist, who also works as a photographer, documenting the contemporary, experimental electronic music scene and life around it. His music is based on sampling from odd sound sources, random data streams and the usage of microphones and various synthesizer. Phil ennobles the trivial, honors the silence and creates an experimental collection of raw textural ambiance. It could’ve been a matter of trompe-l’oeil, a mere juxtaposition of audio signs to mimic functionality, but there’s a much more vibrant and fluid quality to his mind-expanding pieces. He is living in Hamburg, Germany.

Peter Strickmann is an artist performing, installing and manipulating sounding activity in public and domestic environments. While collaborating with various improvising musical groups or noise-makers and exhibiting in a variety of contexts, he generally observes the behaviour of sound and the habits of listening in diverse routine-settings or extra-ordinary circumstances.

"Mellow Toes comes as the second excerpt from my Schnarcharchiv (snoring-collection). This growing collection contains audio-recordings of sleeping humans, friends, and animals in all places and states of rest, sleep and nap, captured during night- and daytime since 2009. It all started during my daily afternoon-naps when I observed my own body getting hyper-sound-sensitive on its way to sleep. In these situations my chest, my arms, my toes turned out to become my biggest ears. It made me search for ways to share and reproduce these hallucinatory and enjoyable states of awake fatigue and airy interspace. Now, the two compositions on Mellow Toes are an attempt to do so. They contain parts of the snoring material that I collected during the last eight years, aswell as some sounds of my prepared objects instruments. The instruments noise may appear as the cheeping bird outdoors that pokes your sleepy mellow toe. All the snoring and sleeping rhythms here, they may help this bird to have a much stronger voice then commonly known." - Peter Strickmann

After ‘Cobraxine’, ‘Boogie Throb’, and the Ana Ott – released ‘Molochville’, Brecht Ameel (Razen/Ameel Brecht) gives us his new album under the Br’lâaB moniker ‘Other People’s Crimes’; a high-on-paranoia, pre-crime-surveillance narrative, constructed after hours in the studio from a combination of Ameel’s own recordings on a widely varied set of instruments, library music, flea-market broken vinyls and old cassettes. Part blind-overdub palimpsest-collage, part straightforward composition, the 10” contains both Br’lâaB’s loop constructions and tracks performed by the found audio phantom band called the Acid Boogie Quartet. Bearing more gritty layers of both sound and subtext than ever, the “Other People’s Crimes” EP stands as an artefact of wild paranoia and spy-thriller sonics, weaving vignettes of surveillance gone wrong, doublethink and confessional echolalia.

Police and thieves are in the streets, running wild with nosebleeds and ill will ids. Dial v for victim as the night horizon broods a neon luminol glow. Howling at the vortex, buried under blindfolds, vigilantes take to crime with fear and ketamines.

After some concerts and a first tour now is the time for the release of the group‘s debut album. Ludwig Wittbrodt will be released on cassette (yes, on real music cassette) and of course digitally. These four tracks, which evolved from a mixture of improvisation and joint composing, show the musical communication between Edis and Emily, but also the fun of combining moods, styles and instruments, which, according to our dusty listening habits, are surprising and irritating in a pleasant way.
