E Go Betta is the third single to be taken from Dele Sosimi’s latest LP You No Fit Touch Am. The album has received huge praise from Okay Africa, Clash Magazine and Songlines, and radio support from stations as diverse as Rinse FM and BBC 6Music. This single is a straight up dance floor monster, made even more foot friendly by a very cunning re-edit courtesy of rising star O’Flynn (Blip Recordings).

Born in Hackney, East London, but soon to return to his parents’ native Nigeria at the age of four, Dele Sosimi was schooled and raised in Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s shadow at the height of early 70s afrobeat. Having been chosen by Fela to join his band at somewhat of a tender age, he was still a young man when sharing Fela’s Glastonbury stage in 1984, and became both Musical Director for both Fela’s Egypt 80 and Femi Kuti’s Positive Force.

After Fela’s passing in 1997, Dele went on to concentrate on his own solo career and, with diligent patience, carved out his own Afrobeat crown. In London, where he now resides, his Afrobeat Vibration all-nighters are charged with his passion, labours and his unrelenting spirit and deliver Fela classics alongside his own compositions from his first two studio albums, Turbulent Times, and Identity.

“When ‘Nen Lambo’ came out I had no special expectations and the least I can say is that its success took me by surprise" exclaimed Bill Loko when we met him in Paris on a ice cold winter day "At some point walking through the streets of Paris, especially in Clichy, became an issue. People coming towards me to ask for autographs was not something I felt comfortable with and I mostly tried to walk away as fast as I could. The thing with fame is you either dive in and get overwhelmed by the waves, or you withdraw. I chose to withdraw and made sure nobody knew where I lived. And I have to blame all of this on Ekambi Brillant.

“Ekambi was already a star back home in Douala when he first spotted me singing and playing guitar at a music contest which took place around 1970. I won the competition and Ekambi came backstage shouting and pointing a finger in my direction: ‘Hey you! Stop singing and give me these songs, I want them.’ I will never forget that man standing there like a tree with a huge grin on his face. Although I was 14 years old at the time, we bonded and he instantly became like a big brother to me, very supportive and always encouraging me to pursue a musical career. The biggest honour came when he chose one of my compositions for his new album. Unfortunately with the political unrest in Cameroon my dream came to a halt and my parents choose to send me to France to study.

“I arrived in Paris in 1976 where I met an old friend from Cameroon, Michot Dhin, a very talented musician known for playing a variety of instruments. Since he didn’t know what to do with his time and with himself we started jamming and working together on a few tunes. The songs ‘Salsa Makossa’ and ‘Nen Lambo’ which I had composed are the fruits of those moments.  

“We knew we were up to something and made our way to Synthe Production, a Parisian studio known for being frequently used by African and antillean musicians. The first people we bumped into were drummer Claude Vamur and keyboard player Jean-Claude Naimro. The chemistry was good so we asked them if they would consider performing a song for us, adding for clarification that we couldn’t afford their services. Naimro replied without hesitation: ‘if I like the song I’ll play, no problem.’ Claude echoed: ‘same with me’. Michot grabbed an acoustic guitar and I started singing, a minute into the song we were all grooving and I could see smiles on all faces … that’s when I knew we had won them over. At the end of the song Vamur said, ‘I have some time now, lets go and record that hit!’

Un projet aux inspirations Afro-Disco tout de suite adopté et diffusé sur la meuh toujours férue de (bonne) musique venant ou rendant hommage à notre mère patrie l’Afrique!

Sous l’impulsion du label Favorite Recordings et fort de leurs longues années de collaboration dans la réalisation de projets tels que The Dynamics, Mr President, Mr Day, Patchworks Galactic Project, ou encore Taggy Matcher, l’insatiable producteur Lyonnais retourne donc à sa grande spécialité d’origine, le Disco, en lorgnant cette-fois du côté de l’Afrique et des Caraïbes.

En effet dans les années 70-80, le mouvement Funk et Disco fût extrêmement influent dans ces régions, comme l’ont très bien mis en avant certains labels spécialisés depuis quelques années. La France et sa communauté Africaine et Antillaise n’était pas en reste, elle aussi nourricière de nombreuses productions du genre. Dans la plupart des cas, cette combinaison entre la nature festive, parfois clinquante du Disco, et celle instinctive, profonde, parfois rugueuse des musiques Africaines, sonne comme un équilibre parfait.
C’est donc dans l’objectif de retrouver cette énergie et ce grain, que Patchworks entame la production de quelques titres ; Sur fond de rythmiques et basses calibrées dont il a le secret, il habille cette fois le tout de guitares, claviers et cuivres égratignés à coup de pédales et boitiers d’effets vintages et bricolés. Un terrain de jeu plus poussiéreux et moins flamboyant que celui du Disco à paillette traditionnel. Mais qui sied parfaitement au savoir-faire d’un Patchworks au sommet de son art et qui semble s’amuser comme un fou à relever ce nouveau challenge.
Gravitant au sein d’une scène musicale Lyonnaise très dynamique et qui ne manque pas d’artistes aux origines Africaines, il décide, comme souvent par le passé, de s’entourer de chanteurs de la région, quitte à les accompagner sur des sentiers musicaux inhabituels pour eux. Un pari plus que réussi et surprenant d’authenticité, comme en témoignaient récemment ces deux premiers titres aux côtés de Sir Jean et Pat Kalla, tous deux dotés de parcours aussi riches que différents.
Les 10 titres de On te l’avait dit répondent immédiatement aux espérances, enchaînant hit après hit et dévoilant d’autres brillantes collaborations auprès de Renaud Bilombo, Hawa ou encore Fouley Badiaga. Avec cette escapade insolite, Patchworks et Favorite Recordings frappent un grand coup et s’affirment un peu plus si besoin comme les véritables garants de la fidélité de nos dancefloors contemporains, envers l’esprit de leurs mythiques ancêtres… Voilaaa tout !!!

On this four-track EP, RNT takes a trip south with some fresh modern takes on a pair of Colombian tropicalia classics from the 1970s! Sisters Elia and Elizabeth Fleta recorded some of the most beloved rare groove from Baranquilla’s early-70s period, and when Jaime Tuiran (Vagabundo Club Social) brought the project to label owners Aaron Dae and JKriv, they jumped at the opportunity to work with such rarefied source material.
