We begin with Senegal of course with the Orchester Laye Thiam, born of a temporary schism within the Star Band of Ibra Kasse and led by the trumpeter of the same name, before his departure for Congo where he accompanied it seems James Brown in Kinshasa. Then it's the spellbinding Poly Rhythmo drummer Danialou Sagbohan for a maddening Afro-Cuban Latin track. His friend Gnonnas Pedro, the greatest singer in West Africa (with Ballaké), continues with his combination where the guitar replaces the piano of the descarga, the same goes for the next track, by Sam Mangwana, another golden voice that sang for both Franco and Tabu Ley Rochereau, the two great rivals of Congolese music, for his only album recorded in Portuguese. A tribute to Mozambican emancipation, where he advocates a return to the land, on a heady rumba / soukouss. No wonder when you know that his mother was Angolan! The Portuguese-speaking pole takes us to Cape Verde via Senegal with Mendes, child of the Medina, popular suburb of Dakar, former member of the Cabo Verde Show combo, immensely popular here. We then take the big leap to Cameroon, with funky Bikutsi and Asiko frenzied where the bass is unleashed on tribal rhythms to die for. We conclude with a jump to Ghana, the vocal harmonies of Thomas Frimpong and the guitars of Eric Agyemang bewitch this highlife highclass.

more or less success, this tropical music from the so-called third world. Reggae, like rap, has its roots in African music, and the blues of black people. It is a one-hour tribute that we offer you here, after having carefully chosen "off-track" titles by artists known for other styles. It shows how African musicians interprets the Jamaican riddims but also how motherland rhythms influenced these descendants of slaves deported to the West Indies.

Just like saudade, morabeza cannot be translated into a word: it is a lifestyle that combines friendliness, kindness, and a sense of welcome. Anyone who has visited Cape Verde will tell you that they have tasted Cape Verdean morabeza!

This month we are paying tribute to the breathtaking music of this small archipelago located off the coast of Dakar. It's incredible to see the number of records and styles that come from these small Creole islands with a complex history: colonized by the Portuguese, forcefully populated by African slaves, the music of Cape Verde has produced some of the best of these two worlds. Funana, Coladeira, Morna, are some of the rhythms that we explore through original vinyl records from the 70s to 80s. Spread and disseminated throughout the world by its numerous diaspora, the music of Cape Verde has blended with all styles, and served as an important vector of messages of emancipation and struggle during the years of struggle for independence against the Portuguese colonialist oppressor. We have a special thought for Americo Brito who recently passed away.

« Bel Ti Misik » Bélé, Biguine, Compa and Cadence from the French West Indies

We are delighted with this new collaboration and hope that you will have as much pleasure listening to it as we had recording it.

This episode, called "Bel Ti Mizik" ("Nice Music of Yours" in creole) is a sunny musical trip to the French West Indies, showing the evolution of the traditional Biguine rhythms of Guadeloupe, Martinique and Haïti, from the 70's/80''s era. Some say that Cuban music traveled in the trunks of sailors, from the Caribbean to the African coasts... others say that it was the students of socialist regimes who went to study in Cuba who popularized these rhythms which became emblematic of an era where anticolonialism and the struggles for independence spread across Africa. It was natural that these rhythms which had traveled in the halls of slave ships, had been enriched by contact with European mazurkas, American jazz and Spanish boleros, returned home, to mother earth. We celebrate them in this mix which shows the incredible richness of the Afro-Latino-Cuban repertoire: Senegalese psychedelic guajiras and cha-cha, Malian rumba, Burkinabé patchanga, Cameroonian boogaloo, Beninese son and Congolese salsa. First copied, then reinvented by brilliant musicians who incorporated local rhythms, they gain a great popularity in clubs, « maquis » and « bal poussière » in capitals and villages.

African sounds aroused great enthusiasm in France at the start of the eighties making Paris a hub of creation. This Strictly Vinyl Mixtape brings together twelve representative titles from this era. Some pieces are recorded in the same studios with the same musicians: Congolese, Cameroonian, Gabonese, Senegalese, Cape Verdean… You will hear underground fusion or mainstream African pop music created by West African artists who were drawn to Parisian studio technology.
