Everything Effacing (from 'Unheimlich Manoeuvre')

Those who know me know that one of my many/main influences is the electro side of the ECM jazz label during the 70s and 80s. These artists were some of the very first electro-acoustic ambient musicians, not to mention their musicianship was outstanding, even by today's standards.

So, here is a thoroughly crafted mix of vintage ECM jazz combined with 90s illbient artists. The main purpose is to start drawing attention to certain vintage ECM composers in a new and artistic light, but also serve as an illbient artists memento.  It's a long eclectic piece, showing many mentalities and textures. Leave it on in the background if nothing else; you will likely find it redeeming at some level.

Winterational - Vintage ECM Jazz & Illbient (mix by Surface 10)

Haunting, narcotic, electrically ecstatic and moving. Semi-ambient in places, but never completely (thankfully). 1969 – 1974.
Brain Eno (almost) said that Miles Davis invented ambient music, you know. So it must be true..*
Eno was referring to He Loved Him Madly, Miles' 1974 elegy for the late Duke Ellington.

A rework from the peerless album In A Silent Way, recorded in a one day session. This shorter version was issued on Panthalassa, the album Laswell put together when they let him loose on Miles' master tapes. I steered clear of the word remix there, because that would be sacrilege, and Laswell's versions actually work. It's still Miles.
3. He Loved Him Madly - 13.40 - 1974
Miles - trumpet, Michael Henderson - Fender bass, Al Foster - drums, Mtume - African percussion, Reggie Lucas - guitar, Sonny Fortune - sax, flute, Pete Cosey - guitar, Dominique Gaumont - guitar.
We haven't used the 32 minute original He Loved.. from Get Up With It here, instead we've got Bill Laswell's 13 minute reinterpretation from Panthalassa.
4. Guinevere - 18.07 - 1970
Miles - trumpet, Wayne Shorter - soprano saxophone, Bennie Maupin - bass clarinet, Joe Zawiunul and Chick Corea - electric piano, John McLaughlin - electric guitar, Dave Holland - electric bass, Khalil Balakrishna - sitar, Billy Cobham & Jack DeJohnette - drums, Airto Moreira - cuica, percussion.
Available on 1979 compilation Circle In The Round, with a longer version on the 1998 Complete Bitches Brew Sessions. 
Guinevere written by David Crosby. To quote Wikipedia, 'According to David Crosby's 2016 podcast interview with Marc Maron, Davis played Guinevere for Crosby. Crosby did not recognize any resemblance between Davis' version and his composition and Davis kicked him out of his house'.
And by the way, John McLaughlin comes from Doncaster.
