Frohe Weihnachten 2015 from Vienna, Austria

A brief historical description of the instrumentation you hear…

Stephansdom Cathedral (“Steffl”) dating 12th Century contains Vienna’s favorite bell, the Pummerin Bell, weighing 21 tons made from the metal of Turkish cannons from the 16th century. The Pummerin Bell is the world’s second largest bell. This bell is rung on high feast days, such as Christmas, and on New Year’s.

Steffl’s gigantic organ comprising 10,000 pipes and originating in the 16th century, resounds in the following recording from Christmas Eve of 2015. Please enjoy the following recording and picturesque journey of our beloved Stephansdom Cathedral in the fair city of Vienna, Austria.

Vocal and Brass Instrumention provided by the clergical and congregational staff of ’Steffl’. I regret not to have received a brochure with musical information, there were 2,000 people present at this Christmas Eve Mass.

Lastly note, there have been no audio engineering additions or adjustments, with the exception of auditory balancing. All resonance and reverberations are natural recordings of the sandstone, pillar and cavernous structures of the cathedral. Please listen with quality speakers or headphones.
