Episode 1 of Season 10 focuses on a blockade at the base of Mauna Kea, a mountain on the “Big Island” of Hawai‘i, ongoing since July 14, 2019. Activists there have been blocking an access road to stop construction of a Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) that would cause grave ecological damage and further desecrate a culturally and spiritually meaningful place to Kanaka Maoli (Indigenous Hawaiians). The program includes J. Kehaulani Kauanui interviewing two activists on the frontlines there: Malia Hulleman and Kaleikoa Kaeo. Both of them were among the 8 protectors who chained themselves to a cattle guard on Mauna Kea Access Road for over 12 hours to block construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope on July 14, 2019 and are still participating in the blockade. Malia Hulleman (Kanaka Maoli) was born and raised on the island of O’ahu. She is a farmer, story protector, daughter, sister, aunty, and land/water defender. Kaleikoa Kaeo is a long time activist who is also an associate professor of Hawaiian Studies, Department of Humanities, at the University of Hawai‘i Maui College.

Season 10, Episode 1 - The Blockade at Mauna Kea

Episode 2 of Season 10 features a look at mutual aid.  After the action news segment with Griselda and Margarita, Kehaulani interviews trans-activist Dean Spade regarding his project called Mutual Aid Toolbox, a collection of tools for creating mutual aid projects to help each other survive these challenging times. Then we hear from Jenna about the Dorian Response Autonomous Supply Line, which is an initiative emerging from a network called Mutual Aid Disaster Relief, a grassroots disaster relief effort based on the principles of solidarity, mutual aid, and autonomous direct action. Spade is an Associate Professor at Seattle University School of Law, where he teaches Administrative Law, Poverty Law, Gender and Law, Policing and Imprisonment, and Law and Social Movements.  In 2002, Dean founded the Sylvia Rivera Law Project, a non-profit law collective that provides free legal services to transgender, intersex and gender non-conforming people who are low-income and/or people of color.  Dean is the author of Normal Life: Administrative Violence, Critical Trans Politics and the Limits of Law, and producer of a video "Pinkwashing Exposed: Seattle Fights Back!," which can be watched free online with English captions or subtitles in several languages. Jenna is an anarchist and community organizer from Norfolk, Virginia, who works with her local Tidewater Solidarity Collective on mutual aid and community safety projects in her region, as well as with the broader Mutual Aid Disaster Relief Network.
