Originally from Tokyo, and now based in London, Anchorsong is a producer and solo live act whose early champions include Huw Stephens (BBC Radio 1) and NYLON Magazine.

Anchorsong – aka Masaaki Yoshida – has become globally recognised for his unique live shows, which many people have described as “like watching a painter drawing on a white canvas”, as he creates electronic music completely live using a sampler (MPC2500) and a keyboard, right in front of the audience. While he mainly performs solo, he frequently augments this setup with a string quartet, for a truly spellbinding show.

Having always been swept away by the atmosphere and excitement of live performance, Anchorsong (who played guitar in a rock band before embarking on this solo journey) brings that vibrant energy, warmth and sense of occasion to the world of electronic music with his compelling live act.

Since his relocation to Europe in late 2007, Anchorsong has supported Bonobo, Prefuse 73, DJ Krush, Daedelus, Gonjasufi, Jaga Jazzist and more, and performed at many prestigious venues including Queen Elizabeth Hall and The Roundhouse in London. He has garnered an international following on YouTube, with videos of his performances having been viewed more than 300,000 times so far.

After wowing the crowds at SXSW 2009, he found himself the subject of a new level of attention, going on to make several appearances on BBC Radio 1, with radio play from Rob Da Bank and a live Maida Vale session for Huw Stephens’ In New Music We Trust show in early 2010.

Having put out three successful EPs in Japan, all of which were released as double packs containing a CD and a live DVD, Anchorsong’s international debut, “The Lost & Found EP” was released on 28th March 2011 on his own label, Case Study.

In May 2011, Anchorsong signed to Tru Thoughts records in the UK, and his highly anticipated debut album, ‘Chapters’, was released in November of the same year. A unique and addictive listen with layer up on layer to explore, the album fuses diverse influences including rock, hip hop and electronica, with every note – from beats right through to strings – played by accomplished multi-instrumentalist Yoshida himself.

Seeking a respite from the noise and clamour of New York City, Eric Phillips and some friends moved for a time out to a remote area on the Olympic peninsula. With no fixed plan in mind, this period of adventure and discovery spent in the beautiful Pacific Northwest gradually seeped into an organically evolving musical vision for Kennebec.

In many ways, ‘Departure’ catalogues this time of his move out west. Eventually moving to Portland to find work as a teacher, film composer, and mentorship under Mark Orton (Nebraska, Tin Hat.) Kennebec’s producing of ‘Departure’ began in Spring 2017. It took two long years of patient, daily labour to complete the album, during which time influences such as Studio Ghibli soundtrack composer Joe Hisaishi, cult hip hop artist Nujabes as well as Australia’s Taylor Crawford and Tycho’s ambient electronica began to permeate the soundworld. On February 14th 2020, Night Time Stories, sister label of acclaimed Late Night Tales, will release his much anticipated debut album and Kennebec will become part of an internationally respected roster including Khraungbin, Leifur James and Ash Walker.

He scored parts for classical guitar, ngoni, kalimba, bass, piano and Rhodes all of which he plays himself on ‘Departure’. Phillips began writing violin and viola parts for friend and collaborator Mirabai Peart (Joanna Newsom, Alela Diane, Ryan Francesconi), whose balkan inflections and beautiful tone became a defining sound of the record — and eventually tied the album together. All tracks on the album were mixed by Phillips.

On ‘Departure’, organic beats and soaring string lines envelope the listener with a dreamful kind of optimism. New single ‘Seasons Change’ is a silky myriad of sounds, textures and techniques that melt against a backdrop of subtle electronics, while ‘Kalahari’ glistens with curiosity and adventure as magnetic strings meet with a mosaic of horns. Elsewhere, the melancholic and wistful moods of ‘Wellspring’ provide a moment of reflection before the warm, fuzzy, feel good grooves of ‘Quest’, embellished by flutes and sax, venture into more overt atmospherics and fluid modulations.

“Recording ‘Departure’ was an amazing learning experience for me as a producer, composer and musician. It was a concentrated period of time in my life that was fully dedicated to focusing in on my craft. To me, the songs sound like journal entries — they bring me back to those specific times and places, but I also write music in an active, intentional way to try and summon the better parts of myself day to day to come to life and fruition. I have to be doing something new and experimenting to be inspired musically and I also wanted the music to be evocative of that sense of discovery in an almost physical sense — a sense of journey, motion and exploration of new spaces. The passing of time, setting out,” says Phillips.

He adds, “I wanted to make something bold and ambitious that sounded fresh and different. I think I took a big swing with this album, and, while I feel it’s impossible to fully nail the vision and intention, I’m really proud of it and the sense of idealism, even if naive at times. Hopefully it’s just fun to listen to someone take a big swing like that.”

In addition to the Kennebec project, Phillips has enjoyed working on and composing the music for numerous feature films, shorts, national parks films, documentaries (including 2017’s National Geographic ‘From the Ashes’), advertisements and video games. Films Phillip’s has worked on have screened and are set to screen at the Toronto, Napa Valley and Big Sky film festivals as well as National Geographic and more.

Masaaki dug deep into the roots of 70s African music on ‘Ceremonial’, while taking inspiration from 70s and 80s Bollywood film soundtracks and traditional Indian percussion on ‘Cohesion’ – a psychedelic, danceable and free-spirited listen that blurs rhythm and melody.

Praised by the likes of Gilles Peterson (BBC 6Music/Worldwide FM), Karizma, Osunlade, Huw Stephens (BBC Radio 1) and Craig Smith, Anchorsong has commanded support from BBC 6Music, being playlisted with his hit singles “Testimony” and “Expo”, ‘Ceremonial’ being hailed as Album of the Year (2016, 5th spot), and ‘Cohesion’ named Album of Day (2018). The unabashedly talented musician has achieved heavy press coverage from the likes of XLR8R, Clash, Magnetic Magazine, Pop Matters, Bandcamp Daily, NME Japan and Rolling Stone Japan, with print reviews from Q Magazine, DJ Mag, and Songlines (which named it as their ‘Top of the World’ album), and airplay across BBC Radio 1, BBC 1Xtra, BBC Asian Network, Worldwide FM, Radio X, FIP and KCRW.

‘Mirage’ is the fourth album from Anchorsong, a record that evokes hazy soundscapes constructed with wind instrumentals, choirs, and global sonic particles. Building on Anchorsong’s long-standing tradition of “borderless music”, ‘Mirage’ fuses intricate rhythms with minimal yet immersive lush interplays of sound to create an auditory odyssey. ‘Mirage’ marks a departure from Anchorsong’s previous two albums – ‘Ceremonial’ and ‘Cohesion’ – specific geographical references. Instead, the album which was half-written during lockdown and when nobody could travel, shows Masaaki internalise his global influences and worldview to conjure a “vague landscape that only exists in my mind”.
