Ancient Future Now is back for good with a full-fledged EP by Mexican talent Suricata. The Paris-based producer serves up two originals which are not only seriously groovy but actually have something to say! The title track „Algo Para La Fiesta“ takes a satirical swing at Mexican club culture, which is permeated by Narco drug cartels and double-edged condoning politics. The other one, „Dance Like You’re Protesting“ is commenting on male toxicity on the dancefloors in our oh-so equal underground club scene. So while the topics of the tunes are certainly heavy, Suricata still manages to wrap them up in extremely catchy tunes that immediately urge you to groove along when they’re on. The included remixes by label heads Alma & Mater and Johannes Klingebiel pick up the pace a notch and are certified house groovers for the peakier times of the night. Johannes plugs „Dance Like You’re Protesting“ into a straight deep house jacket with a hard hitting bassline and all, while Alma & Mater’s version of „Algo Para La Fiesta“ probably got a little high of its own supply with its mind-bending sample-chaos floating over a groove that somehow manages to hold it all together. Anybody else hear that phone ringing? It’s about revolution, baby!

Ancient Future Now reaches the jinxed number 013 and welcomes Matt Bruce aka @van1ty_project to their circles for necessary celebratory exercitations. Matt is also known for flooding the subcultures with tasteful housey explorations via his own label Claptrap, and tasteful housey explorations he does bring here indeed. Juicy poly synths, thick piano chord loops, rubbery 303s, phat claps - you name it, it’s all in there! But don’t be fooled by these attributes, which basically constitute any given classic house track - this is not some arbitrary ordinary sleep house. It’s delicately arranged, on point and very… Vanity Project! And yes, of course, it’s groovy like hell! We thought that goes without saying.

The EP is rounded off by two very different and very fun remixes by bestie armada @rss Disco and @congafever . The former pull all the stops of their beloved summer festival DJ sets and create a disco house beast, that sounds like a love-child of LCD Soundsystem and Prins Thomas. The latter invites us to a supremely tasteful downtempo dub house excursion, including melting organ chords, acoustic drum grooves and dreamy guitar melodies.

@ancient-future-records drops a sign of life via a darkly cosmic remix by label co-runner Johannes Klingebiel for the krautrock band @dasendederliebe . A highlight from their trippy rabbit hole of an album „Schne*e“, Johannes grabs the already slowly brooding „Fttfhttp“ and meanly holds the magnifying glass over its components to bring them to their boiling point.

Johannes himself says: „Das Ende Der Liebe are dear friends of mine and simultaneously one of my favorite bands, so I’m really happy to provide this rework for them. I took the ingredients of this tune, threw them into the blender and stitched them back together like Frankenstein's Monster. From firsthand experience, I can report that this track melts faces on the dancefloor, so handle with care!“

ANCIENT FUTURE RECORDS shares its first outing through the incarnation of the KILUNGA EP.  Facing the future, but remembering all things that have been, we are focussed on the universal presence, the eternal here and now. Four tracks by four artists guide us through this constant state of nowness. First up is FOXDEVILSWILD, whose "Steppenwolf" rides on through endless mystic plains at a leisurely pace. PHILIPP FEIN then carries on with "Cogitatio", a deep reflection that will not only touch our minds, but even more so our bodies. The BPM counter jumps erratically as we switch between the title track, which sounds like Donna Summer gone gritty downtempo house (yes, it works!), and follow-up „Rupture Of Two Souls“ with its delicate webs of synth structures building to an enormous emotional payoff in the third act. „Silky Days“ and „Water Strider“ might be those addictive tunes that never leave your daily listening playlists after hearing them the first time, with their effortless-seeming infusion of acoustic elements like guitar and drums evoking shades of the solo works of Thom Yorke or 90s Trip Hop á la Portishead or Massive Attack updated to 2020s aesthetics. „Sense“ and „Pipe Dreams“ are the most forward club-ready tunes of the pack, the former with its glitched-up vocals and saturated head-spinning straight-yet-odd beat patterns, and the latter with its beautiful ornamentalistic vocal and synth lines growing into increasingly complex and endearing structures over its seven minute runtime.

Is there a difference between eternity and nothingness? ALMA & MATER trace that disparity on first track "Forever Never", and could not be more haunting in the way they do it. Their search is fueled by raw 808 power and inducing saw-tooth synths, so you better watch for your shoes, for you could've already lost'em dancing too hard. Next track "Time Zone Adjustment" makes it all too easy for you to just keep on going, manufactured by the 106ERs, a tag team of future bois Philipp Fein & Johannes Klingebiel. As you probably will have already lost your sense of time, readjustments of your local time zone won't bother you anyway... Flip to the f-side and RHYTCH will take you to another place, although his "Lenoir" might not exactly be what they call reality. It's way too enigmatic for that, all you see is flickering lights and some weird machinery - but exciting, that's what it is! Find your way through the fog and enter the realms of "Okuruwo", reigned by the impeccable DREEMS & MAX SCHMITT. With a little help from their friend JOHANNES KLINGEBIEL they created this world of wonder, of jungles and oceans, of plains and deserts. There is more to find in here than you could possibly search for. But you will have all the time in the world.

Alma & Mater - Please Don’t Intend To Let Your Intellect Dominate You

On the heels of the success of their very sought-after Edits EP, which found support from the likes of Gerd Janson, Ame, John Talabot, Axel Boman and all our other favourite DJs, ALMA & MATER are providing their first full-on solo EP for Ancient Future Now. And they have an urgent message they like to convey: PLEASE DON’T INTEND TO LET YOUR INTELLECT DOMINATE YOU, freely adapted from a quote by the one and only Susan Sontag, as you can hear for yourself on the first track, the aptly titled SUSAN. And the music around it follows suit; no heady over-complication here, instead we get no-nonsense basslines and grooves and an almost too catchy marimba melody, that will surely dominate your feet. The second tune BLOCKCHAIN follows this path, this time the magic ingredient probably being a cowbell that swirls over the hazy synth pads and bouncy basslines. On the flipside ADA (Pampa, Areal) delivers a delightfully subtle and complex remix of „Susan“, which exposes its inner beauty even more and more after repeated listening. Framing the tune in her unique velvety melancholic world of sound elevates the track to a wholly different level. Rounding off the EP is HADE’s BELGIUM MIX of the same track, which perfectly compliments the other remix by going in the opposite direction. Instead of smoothing off the edges he exposes them even more, adding sampled old-school bass and drum sounds with a twinkle in the eyes.

Johannes Klingebiel presents NACHT - an album that was made from the first note to the last sound as one long composition; or as a self-produced DJ-Mix, as Johannes himself sees it. It was conceived in a string of improvisational home-studio sessions, and (as the title indicates) always at night. This process can be heard in the result: The single tracks don't really have a beginning or end, everything feels free-floating and since it's a little dark, you're never quite sure where your steps will take you next. There are bleak shadows, but also soothing spirits. Who can say who's who?

Walking through the empty fields he cast his sight towards the loch in the distance, it was a radiant blue beneath the glimmering sun and upon the water were soft white boats which could barely be seen but for their flickering sails and pale silhouettes. He was not yet neither here or there, hopefully by the end of his hike he might find himself closer to paradise than he was in the present. The escape had been a long time coming, the prison walls had been tall and oppressive for far too long. Now he was free.

Johannes Klingebiel is set to release an EP on Ancient Future Now, described as a "lo-fi" house affair it is suitably trendy yet carries its own unique set of musical principles and offers a whole lot more than meets the eye. Listen carefully...
