In the classical margam of bharatanatyam, the varnam is the recital’s centerpiece, its longest and most emotionally charged performance. In “Tome of Stars“, the varnam appears as the twenty-nine-poem section “Senescence”. Following the exaltation of Anthesis, the beloved as a celestial goddess, love now descends from the stars into the gravity of human frailty. 

This sonnet continues the psychological excavation begun in Part 1 of the “Once Upon a Time” quartet, tracing the fallout of childhood abuse into adult foundational life decisions. It portrays how early trauma corrupted the poet’s capacity to recognize and act upon authentic emotional needs, training him instead to betray his inner truth in the name of obligation to others and their needs. The poem’s central event—the poet’s marriage to someone he did not love—is framed not as a singular failing but as the inevitable culmination of conditioning. Stylized in mythic, often allegorical diction, the sonnet draws a tragic throughline from psychic violation to spiritual treason.

She trained him early how to bend—and break.
She deemed his heart’s extinction, virtue’s crown.
Thus truth became illusion in her wake—
A venomed swamp with meaning choked and drowned. 

A sapling warped by dark enchanter’s spell,
His spirit spread through twisted tracks untrue;
No magic could unmake her binding’s hell,
That marred his mind and rent his sight askew.

He sought a weaver of remembered chains,
Who spun his past into a bridal veil.
Their bond she sowed from duty’s cold refrain;
His passions languished in a frozen jail.

He prayed for guidance, but the gods were cold. 
So, shaped by sin, he wed and sold his soul.
