The next episode of the mix series features Dubliner Barry Donovan (half of the excellent Irish label Lunar Disko records). We had the chance to meet in Toronto and after endless after-hour sessions and attending a John Carpenter concert together we became good friends. To mark World Oceans Day 2021, we partnered with Concentric Records, TBA-21-Academy and Ocean Archive for a full day of broadcasts based on and inspired by sounds from the oceans.

 The incredible Ocean Archive is a sound library of the seas and harbours of the world, from Galapagos to the North Atlantic. It includes many types of whale, fish, earthquake, seismic explosions, methane seeps, tectonic plates and deep water drilling.

 The artists invited to make broadcasts based on this archive are Jake Muir, Izabel, Beluga, Carl Michael von Hausswolff / Dark Morph, Baby Vulture, Terrence Dixon, Jana Winderen reporting live from the seas, and finally Refuge Worldwide programmer Richard Akingbehin.

World Oceans Day - Baby Vulture

An archive episode for International Women's Month with the late, great Detroit producer.

For International Women's Month, we revisit K-HAND's Resident Advisor Exchange, originally published in November 2019. The "First Lady Of Detroit," as Detroit City Council deemed her in 2017, died in August 2021. The following text is from the original post. 

Kelli Hand used to be described as an unsung hero of Detroit house and techno but recently she's finally been getting her due. With a production career beginning in 1990, she has a sprawling discography packed with timeless releases for key labels like Warp, Tresor and her own Acacia Records. Over the years she's produced several hundred tracks, each bearing her distinctive knack for jack and a style marked by a timeless flavour of minimalism. 

In conversation with Matt Unicomb, we hear about how her perspective on releasing music and DJing has changed over the last three decades and her experiences of the ebb and flow of a life spent in dance music. Launching from formative experiences at Paradise Garage and the Music Box, Hand's story covers several vital eras of American dance music history, a lineage that feeds directly into the rare staying power of her productions.

One of the many reasons why I continue to do APA over the years, be it live events or the mix series, is how it attracts very engaging, eccentric and lovable people into my life. Enter Benjamin Johnson, aka SoundinBetween. I first was introduced to Ben when he was looking for a place to live in Philadelphia, moving from Chicago. Coincidentally, I hooked him up with another fellow APA's old apartment, and he was able to land in Philly and launch right into the Philadelphia dance music community in 2020.

In a short amount of time, SoundinBetween landed a residency at the slick & always poppin' club The Trestle Inn, host to other APA alum such as Elvin T and BilLa. Ben is an avid record collector & digger, and keeps a distinct and diverse collection that's ever-growing. It's fascinating to hear how his sound has fused time spent living in Ann Arbor and Chicago(frequenting Smart Bar, of course), with his newfound fondness for the City of Brotherly Love.

For this mix, he delivers a wide range of influences in a "hey, track ID?" selection of rare, unique cuts, many of the 'braindance' variety. All of the tracks are analog-inclined, giving it a warm, lush feel throughout, but just like SoundinBetween himself, the mix as a whole is anything goes.
