Having made an impact in the electrofunk and skweee communities through a series of 7-inches featuring his signature warped-funk sound, Luke Sanger a.k.a. Duke Slammer shifted gears to produce the material for Simple Pleasures, a 3-track EP showcasing his love of dancefloor friendly tunes that retain the musical richness running through his entire repertoire.

Guided by his roots as a techno DJ, Simple Pleasures is the result of Sanger's desire to move towards a more mix-oriented production style while staying true to his talent for infectious composition and bright, emotive melodies. Inspired by the flat landscape and maritime climate around his home in Norwich, UK, Sanger pulls up the submerged Detroit techno of Drexciya, the classic Chicago acid house vibes of Adonis and the relentless funk of Bootsy Collins to bring forth his own sound that is fresh, concise, and uplifting.

Duke Slammer's tracks are supported by 3 masterful remixes from veterans of the skweee movement. Fitzroy North transports the title track into synthed-out slow funk territory, while Mesak unhinges the watery hooks of Seahenge to create a slippery head-nodder. RPG-H8R rounds out the release with a moody, floating take on Black Shuck.

Following his debut album on Bedroom Research and a series of EPs, Montreal-based producer and sound designer Fade Runner (a.k.a. Simon Girard) has teamed up with Ancient Robot to deliver ‘Geometric Smoke’, a six track release showcasing his grasp of meticulously crafted beats and engaging melodies.

Drawing from a background as a DJ and collector of early drum-n-bass records, Girard creates layered, atmospheric pieces that are well-grounded with intricately pulsating percussion. While the EP’s melodic content seeps in and out of focus through pastoral or oceanic sounds, carefully designed rhythms capture the listener’s attention throughout.

With nods to the work of sound-design-focused beatmakers such as Amon Tobin, Girard’s sound tempers homemade breaks and bass with emotionally-driven melodies influenced by his admiration of Japanese pop, video game soundtrack artists such as Nobuo Uematsu, and the sci-fi worlds of French graphic artist Mœbius.

Hot on the heels of a vinyl EP release on German label Slam City Jams, Montreal-based producer gonima (a.k.a. Evan Magoni) teams up with Ancient Robot records for Out of Sides, a 6-track release that veers into melodic, glitch-beats territory.

Drawing on experience with a variety of projects including drum duty in math-rock band Boy Friends, Magoni’s compositions as gonima are informed by a solid grasp of both musical structure and sound manipulation.  The gonima project traverses house, ambient, lo-fi hip-hop beats and glitch with a consistent melodic thread running throughout each track. 

Unlike Grids, gonima’s previous dancefloor-ready release, Out of Sides is particularly reminiscent of classic IDM pioneers of the early 2000s. With influences such as Plaid, Arovane and Hizmi, Out of Sides explores the more introspective side of electronic beats, blending cold timbres with lush melodies to create a subtle emotional impact. On each of the 6 tracks, Magoni weaves a layer of mysticism and natural wonder on skittering beats in various ways, be it through dream-like synth lines or manipulated acoustic samples.

Fever Loop is a new project from Finnish artist Heikki Sillanpää, also known as DKSTR. This album is a series of one take jams made during sleepless late night sessions with one analogue synthesizer and a simple 16 step sequencer. The final album cuts are edited from longer loops that go on for hours.
