Album: Born from a Tomb

Generally I tend to avoid Ukrainian bands, simply because the chances to find a rotten apple in their black metal scene is given at a too high rate. The more you travel on the metal map towards the east, the larger the ratio of NS-crap gets. It is astounding to see the degree in which scenes from these areas are infested with this ideology and accordingly do bands, who avoid/reject a political agenda, find it difficult to shine through this wall of stupidity. Ossadogva from the Ukraine would be a band whose concept lies far off what some of their native polished vacuum heads perform on a daily basis. Here, Lovecraft and the Cthulhu-myth is what the art is all about. The horrors from outer space... the unspeakable creatures that bring terror upon man … haunt their dreams and drive them to insanity. 

Three tracks can be found on the second full-length -- Born from a Tomb -- by this band and with around forty-two minutes in length quite a lot is offered to the listener. Depressive black metal is the style that can be found on this release, so it makes actually sense to have longer tracks. But can the listener expect the usual brew of ingredients that similar bands have gained some prominence for? In some respect Ossadogva follow what other artists have been created before and do not try to invent the wheel new here. The difference would be that the Ukrainians do not attempt to suck and get on the nerves in their attempt of creating a desolate and haunting atmosphere. Generally speaking, the music is slow played black metal, which comes with the typical reverb-loaded guitar play, screams by the vocals -- not overdone though -- and an extensive amount of repetition in terms of the motives and riffs. Even though there are some bursts out of the monotony which dominates the oeuvre of the Ukrainian artists from beginning towards the end. Alas, these eruptions are simply too short and appear to rare to have a lasting impact. Too sudden they pop up and also vanish again. 

As already discussed above, the band follows a quite basic concept here and avoided in the recording process any variation of already used ideas from appearing on his release. So, the listener might come to the conclusion that this is just one among other albums that can be neglected, as innovation seems to be far off. Yet, it all comes down on how the facets had been brought together and in this respect Ossadogva did a good job; despite their reluctance to progress towards new shores. The opener for instance has a nice play of the guitars and especially the bass in the background adds some neat harmony to the overtly dark and depressive atmosphere. This instrument creates some catchy tune and as it is clearly distinguishable from the rest of the music, it has an impact and a surprising positive one. The guitars play some minimalist riffs and repeat them excessively, but the band did not overdid it and the overall sound is as such as it will please the fans of the genre the band is generally associated with. In terms of the vocals the standard repertoire appears here, but the Ukrainians kept the extreme to a minimum: hence, wild screams of desperation, like some artists like to add them despite their negative impact on the perception and quality, cannot be found on Born from a Tomb. The vocals are extreme, similar to the depressive black metal stuff and able to transport this impression of desolation, but it was performed in a controlled way.
