Rancid always seemed so performative to me. I like a few of their songs but anytime someone told me their favorite punk band was Rancid I just went "oh cool"  I just knew i wouldnt be able to relate to that person through punk music most likely.

Tape shows were most definitely a thing in punk - just doing basically a radio show and introducing either local bands or other stuff you liked and just sell those tapes via the DIY distors

I can think of another HC example although that was form the emo-ed 90s: the band Julia from San Diego had a literal "Our Last Song" released only on a split-7" with a Czech band. On a Czech label. It slaps.
