With over a decade of providing the most cutting edge drum and bass the genre has produced, and after putting out monstrous release after monstrous release on the world’s leading drum and bass label Ram Records, Audio has cemented himself as one of the world’s all time heavyweights. Whether it be playing to crowds of 15,000 people at festivals such as Rampage, or at an intimate, local club, there is one thing that Audio is renowned for and that his trademark dark sound and ability to fuse elements from all ends of the spectrum and make it sound as nasty as possible.

The first track is no exception. The sinister tones of ‘Now the Future’ set in and grab hold, taking you into the mind of Audio’s twisted vision of the future. Percussive elements tick away under petrifying atmospheres, building up into an unstoppable bassline offensive. Perfectly executed pitched up drums rhythms cut through delivering an onslaught of dancefloor carnage leaving no escape.

And next up is ‘Drop It Human’. Kicking off, spine chilling and twinkling blips immerse you into the twilight zone. As the main lead filters into the build, the track thrusts into a sonic array of growling mids and low end sub grit, delivering a devastating blow. Audio’s precise, sharp, stepped trademark drum sound forms the backbone, marching the track through to inhuman perfection. 

Audio yet again sets the bar with two monstrous cuts that are set to dominate the clubs and festival circuit in 2016. Drum & Bass nightlife operation turned label, 'Major League DNB' offers their third outing in a string of thoroughly curated releases. This time around international twosome 'Zombie Cats' make their re-appearance on the Holland based imprint. The 3rd installment 'Portal EP' in the label series opens up with a rework of 'Portal' by household 'Shogun Audio' name 'Joe Ford'. The opening track is a somewhat brutal effort that showcases 'Joe Ford's' signature high energy approach whilst cleverly re-assembling the main elements of the original. The original version of 'Portal' kicks in straight after the rework. The title track of the EP is actually a collaboration between Zombie Cats and Berlin Based 'Safra'. Whilst the rework is somewhat of a frenzy, the original effort proves to be a little more on the technoid side of things. 'Little Monsters' is not only the closing down track but also a bonafide dancefloor destroyer.

The name Burr Oak should already be very familiar to Trendkill Records’ most ardent followers. The emergent drum and bass supergroup, formed of Toulouse producers Opsen and The Clamps, burst onto the scene last year, striking listeners with their intense, no-holds-barred approach to neurofunk. Drawing on their ever-innovative sound design skills and prolific work rate, the two Frenchmen crafted a whopping four releases for the Prolix-helmed label last year and have since guested on Eatbrain and Cause4Concern in 2020. Now celebrating a homecoming of sorts, October finds the pair returning to Trendkill for the Polar Lows EP, which features a seismic alliance with Austrian duo TR Tactics. 

Showcasing their production prowess, the individual contributions from each member of Burr Oak shine through over the course of the three-track project. As a former member of the innovative trio Signs, well-known for their halftime contributions to labels like Noisia’s Division, Opsen audibly leaves his mark on opener and title track “Polar Lows”, which utilises flourishes of snarling, hip-hop inspired breakbeats before searing synths launch it into a riotous climax. Meanwhile, some of the blistering basslines on show throughout the EP are well-aligned with The Clamps’ signature sound, the sum of the two’s contributions making for phenomenal results. 

Add Trendkill labelmates TR Tactics into the mix on “Washoku” and expect a four-way collaboration of epic proportions, deploying both heavyweight synth work and fleeting, atmospheric pauses. Rounding off the EP is the brooding, progressive “Intelligent Suicide”. Introduced with melancholy ambiances and subdued stabs before hurtling towards a gritty, mechanical crescendo garnished with whirring feedback and drilling basses, the song makes for one of the pair’s most intriguing creations to date, serving as a firm reminder that these two titans of the neuro scene have plenty more tricks up their sleeves.
