Freedom was an improvised piece at a CD release party for The Open Door Orchestra.  A wonderful project spearheaded by Shannon Micheal Terry.  Had the honor to play with Jim McGrath, Jason Hahn, Dominic Dean Breaux, Ian Walker, Jon Ossman to name a few.  We had so many powerful improvised pieces that were later brought in to the studio and recorded.  Enjoy.

This was a live recording in Topnaga with Brendon O'Halloran on Cajon and ankle bells.  I played didjeridu, and added bilma and shaker later.

Using the inspiration from the great Reggie Watts, the art of improvisation is being utilized.  Periodically I get a chance to Co-create with a wonderful improvisationalist, Aaron Good from Hawaii.  In this completely improvised piece, not a sliver of pre-thought or discussion took place.  Raw and in the moment - a time to give thanks.

Heartful of Rhythm

I enjoy playing and exlploring new and ancient ways of expression, whether it be with my movement, breath or most any instrument I can make vibrate and sing.  At this point in my life, the instruments I visit most regularly:  Didjeridu, balafon, wood frogs, casa casa (west african bell), Djembe, caxixi, tambourine stick, samba whistle, jaw harp, voice.  My approach is to first find the sweet spots and tonal areas that sound appropriate and then to explore rhythmic phrases on any thing I pick up.  Then, if it is a melodic instrument, I begin with two notes and expand from there.  I feel the process to be insect like or a frog kinship.  In fact, I found much inspiration from crickets and frogs.  They seem to express loud and free and mostly in groups.  At times, in time, and other times completely a-rhytmic.  Encouragement to those who play and push through the fear of self-judgement...Earth is patiently waiting for you to get over yourself. :)
