The Four Seasons (known since 1967 as Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons) is an American rock and pop group consisting of Frankie Valli as lead singer, Bob Gaudio on keyboards, Tommy DeVito on guitar, and Nick Massi on bass. The group distinguished itself from other groups of the time (1960s) by their Italian-American sound. It also had some reminiscences of Doo-wop despite not being a group with this genre. Their success was great, between 1962 and 1967 they reached the top ten thirteen times, with songs such as Sherry, Big Girls Don't Cry, Dawn, Rag Doll and Let's Hang On. In 1999, the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, in inducting the group into the prestigious list, declared that The Four Seasons was the most popular rock group before The Beatles. In 1960, the group The Four Lovers changed their name to their current one with Frankie Valli as lead singer, Bob Gaudio (previously a member of The Royal Teens) on keyboards, Tommy DeVito on guitar, and Nick Massi on bass (the latter first replaced by Charles Calello and then by Joe Long in 1965). The R&B influence in their music was great, so much so that some of their early singles achieved success through R&B audiences; in their early days some listeners also thought the Four Seasons were African-American.
Between 1960 and 1964 they very often topped the Cash Box magazine charts with their landmark songs such as: Rag Doll which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for a fortnight in 1964 and number six in Germany, Walk Like A Man number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks in 1963, Sherry which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for five weeks and number seven in Holland in 1962 and Big Girls Don't Cry which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for five weeks also in 1962.
In 1976 the single December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night) reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks, in the United Kingdom for a fortnight and in Canada, second in New Zealand, third in the Netherlands and Australia and sixth in Norway. The Four Seasons were a group of considerable importance. No other white American group of the time, apart from the Beach Boys, could boast such complex harmonies, although they were much more firmly in the tradition of Italian-American doo-wop. Their more refined productions were in step with the times and, in some respects, innovative.
The group returned to musical headlines in 2008 and 2017 thanks to covers done by Madcon and Måneskin of their 1967 song Beggin', respectively.
