Deconstructing Grace is an electronic, experimental album based on songs of Jeff Buckley’s debut and only album: Grace. My inspiration for the concept of this project came from a series of paintings called ‘Las Meninas’, by Picasso: 58 Paintings based on one painting. Picasso analysed, deconstructed and reinterpreted the original in 58 different ways: you saw the original painting through Picasso’s eyes. This inspired me and I wanted to apply the same concept to music, with my favorite album of all time to base my compositions around. I ended up making 10 tracks around Grace. With each one I took different elements and atmospheres of Grace, by first recreating them, to then build a completely new composition with that captured my interpretation of the very essence of Grace. This way people would hear Grace through my ears.

Ocean Blanket:
There is a particular moment in Dream Brother that I found so incredibly powerful. At 2:16, the music lingers on one chord, and Jeff Buckley colors the space with a beautiful, ethereal vocal improvisation. After a few measures, a world filled by eternally reverberating echoes of Jeff Buckley's voice opens up that builds to a cluster of a wringing harmony in chorus. This is the moment I wanted to capture and build upon with my composition.

There is one sentence that I repeat during the ending, which is "With the ocean washing over". This sentence is the last sentence in Grace and I find it particularly poetic because of the way Jeff Buckley tragically left this world. Jeff Buckley died on May 29, 1997 swimming in the Mississippi River until suddenly a wave took him and he drowned. For me, my composition is about the sudden and tragic death of Jeff Buckley. The wave of the ocean that washed over him is the blanket of his final resting place, thus the title: Ocean Blanket.

Dulcimer Intro:
The penultimate composition of Deconstructing Grace is based on Dream Brother, the last song on Grace. Dream Brother opens with a conversation between two dulcimers, one on the left and one on the right, each playing a couple notes. The Dulcimers lay down a spiritual, eastern coloured carpet for the rest of the song to develop on top of. I found this intro so powerful and telling, that I wanted to build my composition around that atmosphere. At home I had a Zither, which came very close to the sound of the dulcimers in Dream Brother.

Orchard:
Orchard is a composition based on Jeff Buckley's version of Corpus Christi Carol. Jeff Buckley plays a very soft and intimate guitar part and sings with a heavenly high voice of which the beauty spontaneously brings a tear in my eyes. Corpus Christi Carol is actually a cover of a composition written by Benjamin Britten in 1933, of which the text even dates back to 1504. The text mentions that the story takes place in an orchard. With different sounds in my composition, I wanted to make it sound as if the listener were effectively in an “Grace tinted” orchard to bring the listener to that place.

Afraid is based on the title track of Grace, this song was created by simply taking two elements from it and using them as building blocks for a new composition. You can hear the first element in the first few seconds of Grace. You hear two guitars on the left and right and a melody floating above them that, to me, sounds similar to a theremin. I whistled this melody and recorded it on different speeds on my tape machine and layered these on top of each other. The second element I used can be heard at 3:40 in Grace. You can hear two acoustic guitars on the left and right that are being strummed, only they sound muted. For some reason, that sound caught my attention every time I listened to Grace and so I chose that sound. I recreated this sound with my acoustic guitar and slowed it down.

Harmonium:
Harmonium is based on ‘Lover, You Should've Come Over’. The arrangement of Jeff Buckley 's song is so rich in musical ideas that there was a lot to like, but my attention went to only one part, one instrument of the song: the intro played by a Harmonium. For me, that first minute recapitulates the entire arrangement, and so I decided to do something with that sound for my composition, and by extension named the composition after it. However in my composition I only used a (cheap) melodica.

Moonlight:
Moonlight is based on the famous cover of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah. In the intro, Buckley plays the melody of Hallelujah with just his guitar, but he harmonizes it with very scary, dissonant chords that completely flip the mood of the original (0:00 - 0:40). I found this atmosphere so incredibly captivating that I even wished it was longer. For that reason, I made a composition around it.

Wine:
My composition Wine is based on Lilac Wine by Jeff Buckley. My goal with this composition was to zoom in on the sad and floaty atmosphere of the original. The intro of Jeff Buckley 's Lilac Wine captures with only his voice and his guitar the exact emotion of what it is like to be drunk and in love. Then, when all the instruments come in, the minor chords change to major, but the song still feels as dark blue as before. My composition combines the sad, floaty atmosphere of Lilac Wine's intro with my interpretation of the instrumentation.

I Love You:
I Love You is based on So Real by Grace. The piece stays in an eerie, creepy mood for most of the time (0:12 - ...) until somewhere in the middle it suddenly explodes into a loud, noisy, distorted section (2:13 - 2:40). I found this tension arc very interesting and took it as a blueprint for my composition.

Wait In The Fire:
This composition is based on some elements from the chorus of the title track of Grace (1:10 - 1:30). "Wait In The Fire" is the phrase that is repeated throughout the choruses like a mantra. Underneath, the drums and percussion maintain a compelling, low, almost tribal triplet rhythm. Haunting violins hover over the music, further emphasising the underlying creepy and mysterious atmosphere. These three elements were the pillars of my composition.

Blanket is Warm:
Blanket Is Warm is based on Grace's opening track, Mojo Pin. When creating my composition, my attention went to the first minute of the record: Electric guitars lay you in a warm bed of two repeating, almost hypnotic chords paired with melodic fragments. A voice hovers over you like an angel inviting you into the mysterious world of Jeff Buckley. That's how the first minute of this record feels to me and I wanted to capture exactly this atmosphere with my first composition.

Bardos is András’ Former EDM Project. He started releasing under this alias ever since he started creating music. Between 2016 and 2018, Bardos gained some popularity with singles like 'Fly High' and 'One’, which were shared on big music platforms like 'House Nation' with over 1.000.000+ streams combined. In late 2018, 'Blossom' was released. It was his Debut EP in which he found Bardos' distinct electronic, colourful and creative sound, influenced by artists such as Porter Robinson, Madeon and Flume.

If you are a day-1 fan, you might remember releases such as ‘Intense’, ‘A Reason To Live’ and ‘Broken Chains’ which kickstarted his musical journey on SoundCloud by being active in a music producer Facebook group called 'The Future of House' (2016 - 2018).
