Equally as creative as a solo artist as he is working alongside a selection of regular collaborators, San Francisco’s Andrew Rasse, aka Butane, continues to expand his rich discography of quality productions across house, techno, minimal and beyond. Fresh from a run of releases on his home imprint Extrasketch, September sees Rasse back alongside fellow studio partner and Alphahouse alumnus Andras Toth as the pairing return to the label for the fifth time with ‘Reaction’. 

Opener ‘The King Is Dead’ is a low-slung minimal production peppered with punchy tribal drums and icy hats, while ‘Weather The Storm’ remains decidedly deep but takes the energy up with a driving bassline and off-kilter rolling percussion, creating a snaking, hazy groove. ‘New York New York’ is a freeform funky tech house cut, with acid-fuelled stabs and warping electronics which create a smoky late-night affair.  ‘Elevate’ sees the pair dive deep into a drummy, cascading trip through hypnotic heavy metallic techno textures. To close, ‘Little Reminder’ mixes playful organic tones with a heady groove to offer up a certified after-hours cut.

After their excellently crafted ‘Reaction’ EP last September, Extrasketch boss Butane and decades-long collaborator Andras Toth join forces yet again as their work evolves to find its most dancefloor spirit yet. Building on their deep and expansive solo and collaborative catalogues, this May the pair unveil three fresh productions across their latest EP ‘Tribe | Danse | Caste’.

The eerie and tipped-out ‘Tribe’ opens things on a distinctly wonky, off-kilter techno tip, with slick percussion and a warping synthetic bassline driving things into deepest territories. ‘Danse’ brings a wealth of organic textures to the fore, with rolling drums meeting a transcendental, mysterious woodwind melody. ‘Caste’ closes the show with a tough, club-ready low-end and deep ethereal vocal chants.

Whether producing alongside fellow artists or releasing solo material via a number of the scene’s most respected labels, Andrew Rasse, aka Butane, continues to build on his reputation as one of the most consistent names within house and techno, with his latest label Extrasketch becoming an essential hub for his ongoing work. Initially launched as a ‘vanity label’ to house his own material, Rasse’s introduction of close friends to the label in 2019 opened the door for an ongoing series of collaborations, with Hungarian DJ and producer Andras Toth being the first to land on the imprint. A longstanding collaborator of Rasse’s, releasing music via both his Alphahouse and Little Helpers imprints, Toth’s catalogue has also welcomed material via Note Records and Akkult, with his deep, minimal sound finding support amongst a host of key players in the scene.  Having last combined on the label in May to offer up their nine-track experimental ‘Odysseys’ project, the pair now return to Extrasketch with their latest collaboration ‘Intergalactic’ – delivering three deep and introspective productions typical of their partnership.

Lead production ‘Echoes’ sets the tone for the EP in hypnotic fashion, taking cues from its title as warping, echoed vocal chants weave amongst heavy drums, shuffling percussion and a crackling synth lead.  Next, the slow-grooving ‘Spacetime’ brings a hazy, delicate melody and slick organic drums to the refined core groove, keeping a funky yet hypnotic ultra deep vibe. To close, the striking yet eerie ‘Avatars’ switches up proceedings as Rasse and Toth opt for an entrancing spaced-out medley, with sweeping atmospherics atop of further tripped out vocals and a syncopated, murky low-end to shape up the package in style.
