Prima base in uscita, un intro, per ora strumentale, per ringraziare anche quei pochi ma buoni che mi hanno aiutato a rimettere in piedi il mio studio dopo il mio ultimo, ennesimo, arresto per la mia attività artistico/politico/sociale. L'ennesima volta che ti buttano via, insieme a tutto cio' a cui tieni e poi ti sputano di nuovo sulla strada, a ricominciare da zero, e non è la prima volta che bisogna rialzarsi, aprire gli occhi e respirare di nuovo.

Andrea “Casper” the pirate was born and raised in that strange crossroads where Milan ends: outskirts, railway tracks, depots, social centres. His first language is punk, then come the squats, the travels, the clandestine sound systems. Music is not a “cultural sector”, it is a way of being in the world: speakers in the middle of nowhere, occupied streets, nights where those who have no space take it for themselves.

Between the late Nineties and the early Two-Thousands, Casper helps to give birth to and grow several rave and pirate projects that will leave a mark on the Italian and European scene. His name starts to circulate not as a personal brand, but as a node in a network: collectives, crews, individuals who organise illegal parties, marches, communicative actions that blend politics, art and everyday survival.

With the cycle of No Expo struggles and the metropolitan mobilisations that accompany it, his face and his nickname also enter the official news. He is indicated as one of the reference points of the street “guerrilla”, of the untamed marches, of the part of the city that refuses to turn itself into a shop window. From then on, a long chapter opens of investigations, trials, convictions, restrictive measures and periods of detention, in Italy and abroad.

In courtrooms and in the articles that talk about him, Casper becomes for some the “internal enemy” to be displayed; for others, a symbolic figure of the criminalisation of dissent, of rave culture and of those forms of social conflict that are not compatible with the decorum of the shop window. In prison he keeps writing, studying, helping other prisoners with letters, petitions, stories, and turns that experience into political and narrative material, not into a fetish.

Once out of prison, Casper chooses neither retreat nor self-mythologising. He still lives in Milan, works in social services dealing with housing and paths towards autonomy for people on the margins, and carries on a daily work of care and support that for him is part of the same struggle: no freedom is real if it cannot be shared. At the same time, he continues to produce electronic music — jungle, breakbeat, dub, contaminated techno — maintaining a direct line with rave history and with the new generations who meet those sound systems on trucks and in squares.

From this crossroads the Nuova Pirateria Romantica (NPR, New Romantic Piracy) is born: not yet another acronym, but a route. NPR holds together pieces of different stories — anarchicx, autonomx, punks, ravers, squatters, antifascistx — and pours them into a project that explicitly refuses prisons, police, nations, borders and the fairy tale of liberal democracy as the highest possible horizon. Its is a political and poetic piracy: collectives, crews and individuals who choose self-organisation, conflict, art and music as tools of concrete freedom.

Casper is one of the faces and voices of this path: he writes manifestos, stories, essays, works on hybrid novels between science fiction, AI and political autobiography, and experiments with new forms of communication between the street and the net. He claims his past without turning it into a heroic fetish, and rejects the idea that repression can define a person’s life forever: for him, the only biography that counts is the one that keeps changing, together with those who walk beside him.

Today, between a shift in social work, a night locked at home because of restrictive measures and a set recorded for the web, Casper continues to do what he has always done: stand with those who have no voice, build spaces of real freedom and remind everyone that graces are not asked for — they are taken.
