what a great track.... reminds me of the sets you used to play at "Lost" way back when. 

We probably don't need to tell you who Deadbeat is. (He even did a previous RA Podcast for us, all the way back in 2007.) But if you need a refresher, he's one of the most important and revered artists in dub techno. The Canadian artist came up in the Montreal scene alongside other trailblazers like Akufen and other Canadians (think Cobblestone Jazz, Mathew Jonson, Wagon Repair, etc). His early records for ~scape are some of the most classic and influential minimal there ever was, but dub is always at the heart of his work, and runs in the veins of BLKRTZ, the prolific label he runs himself.

Sa Pa, on the other hand, sits somewhere in the ambient zone. Originally from Adelaide, he's found a powerful creative sparring partner in Deadbeat. The two released their first album together, The Mountain, earlier this year. It's the 50th release on BLKRTZ and maybe one of the most monumental records in either artist's catalogue, a triple-LP that harks back to the hypnotic, plink-plonk days of yore with the strong cross-genre underpinning that marks Deadbeat's work these days, and plenty of lovely atmospheric wiggles.

The duo's lengthy RA Podcast, taken from two different recordings at their Absurd Dub Lustre party in Berlin, mirrors the LP's sound, weaving through tracks new and old. It's full of warm, dubby vibrations and smooth transitions.

When Andrea Parker steps up to the plate you know there is going to be no compromise. As boss of Touchin’ Bass and aperture her vision of electro and electronic music comes together in one unique aesthetic. A landscape where Stockhausen, Drexciya, Coil, Daphne Oram and the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, Schooly D, Aphex Twin, Delia Derbyshire, Autechre, Adidas and Booty Bass collide. Her mix in the EPM Podcast series slices open the underbelly of contemporary avant-garde electronic production and lays its festering carcass in the middle of the dancefloor. From the aforementioned Drexciya to North Manc Beds, Russell Haswell and Regis to Christian Vogel, Einoma to Monolake and Surgeon to Coil, Parker’s initial love of film and cinematic soundscapes connects the flow of her music as much as any beat or break. Perhaps the New York Metro summed up her style best: "Andrea Parker...she may be a lady but she ain't dainty - picking hard, solid bass-heavy beats to slam you with.  She doesn't traffic in the happy-as-a-robot variety of electro, some of her choices are darker than what most people have come to associate with electro, and sometimes it literally feels like she's taking you for a ride down the street like a Mafioso, holding your head out of the side of a car just inches away from the pavement! She will certainly sort the men out from the boys." And with the new EPM podcast mix, Miss Parker certainly does that.

This mix was recorded in June 2000, 3 days after the first DEMF. I had just moved into a different place in Detroit, and the last items left in my old downtown apartment were 2 Technics, a tape deck, hi-fi amp + speakers, and a Numark DM-1550 rotary mixer from the 80s. In those days I'd been going out to see Theo Parrish + KDJ play small loft parties around town, and was listening to a ton of old WBMX/WGCI radio mixes and Ron Hardy Music Box recordings......this session, each side recorded directly to cassette in one take, is a reflection of those circumstances and influences.

This journey chronicles Bicknell's decades-long exploration of electronic music, reflecting his deep roots as a collector, DJ, and producer. Drawing from a wide palette of tones and inspirations, it offers a raw and honest snapshot of his constantly evolving sonic identity.

Over the course of 75 minutes, the mix shifts from bright atmospheres to textures of pure power, ultimately entering a dark, low-ceilinged tunnel before reappearing in blinding white, taking a deep breath, and continuing. 

It’s an intricate processing of various dimensions, featuring exclusive unreleased tracks from the 2x12" and 7" editions of the album.
