crossing new life

A deer scared by tourists and a goat with a bag over its head heads to the hills, and finds sanctuary at the temple. Although I've lost all my pictures from Nara, so this one is from Sweden!
Galloping rhythm and bass with some esoteric arps, heavy pads, building up into a light, yet heavy, melody and crescendo.
Made in Ableton with Arturia Analog Lab and the classic synth sounds of Katsuhiro Chiba. There is a little bit of Ennio Morricone in there too. The final bell gong is the Shoro of Enryakuji Buddhist temple on Mount Hiei, near Kyoto, Japan.

Merle Law is a singer-songwriter based in Portland, OR, whose songs create an intricate tapestry of memory and longing. Initially working under the moniker Palm Sunday, Law has developed a sound driven by untraditional counter rhythms, a melodic tide pool and personal poetry that relates to the listener. Born Meredith Law to a Philly drummer and a singer from south Louisiana, Merle’s influence pulls from a vast library of songwriters. 
Merle Law’s approach, recording to tape on a cheap nylon string guitar with a spectral band, is steeped in the textures of the homes they’ve inhabited: from the moss-draped bayou to the deep and foreboding gray fog of the Pacific Northwest, and the illustrious roads in between that connect them. Law’s new album was recorded by Ryan Oxford at Color Therapy Recording and is set to be released in 2025.

This past Saturday, the winter solstice of 2924, I recorded this left field, deep, psychedelic mix during personal medicine session. Honoring the darkness and turning inward to that root energy from your gut.

This mix is meant for your own headspace or healing ceremony. I conjured energy from medicine circles, the natural world, and my own life’s journey as I felt into my year.

I hope you too, reflect, go inward, and light a candle. A small flame to honor the brighter days ahead. 

I’ve been enjoying one take mixes like the past few I’ve put on my SoundCloud. I believe true art is in the intuition, honoring a moment of expression and not getting to hung up on perfection. A lesson in life that takes practice.
