Faulty (broken orbit) is an hour-long through-composed immersive audio work exploring  sonic idiosyncrasies of mic’ed surfaces and amplified quotidian objects — collected, invented, imagined or implied – activated into movement and then layered against a shifting, slowly settling field of electronic feedback and live-processed instruments.  The work is built via elaborate and precarious systems, in homage to inventor Rube Goldberg’s circuitous machines, which are also the inspiration for my self-designed  virtual (MAX-based)  sound processing instrument that has been my primary compositional and performance tool for the past 10 years. 

Faulty (broken orbit) was first commissioned by and exhibited as a site-configured 10-channel audio installation at Diapason gallery for sound in New York City, and was  later released on CD  (in stereo) by Important Records, the US-based sound art and experimental music. Since 2011, Faulty (broken orbit) has been presented in gallery and sound art spaces in NYC and throughout the US; VIctoria, Australia, and Hamburg, Germany.

A hydrophonic recording that was made under and on the waters of the Paiva River at Nodar, Portugal. It features filtering created by placement of objects and movement of the hydrophones in the riverbed’s rocky crevices. The recording later became part of my 12-channel sound design for Symptom, a multi-disciplinary work directed by US-based choreographers The Body Cartography Project, presented in 2011 at CounterPulse, SF in 2012 and in 2011 at The Coil Festival, NYC/

Revised version of "Traces: for Electric Organ, i-Phone Videos, Objects and Electronics". (The first iteration was presented at KM28 in Berlin on April 24, 2019, as part of "Very Organized"  a concert of works for electric organ by a group of Berlin-based composers. ) Variation 2 is part of an immersive multi-channel work that is currently in progress.

BIO
Andrea Parkins is a Berlin-based sound artist, composer, and electroacoustic instrumentalist engaging with interactive electronics as compositional/performative process. She is known for her pioneering approach on her electronically processed accordion, and investigation of embodiment and chance with her custom-designed software instruments.

Parkins' projects encompass sound and intermedia installations, electroacoustic compositions and performances,  and  scores for dance, film and intermedia performance. Her work has been presented at the Whitney Museum, The Kitchen, Experimental Intermedia, Kunsthalle Basel, NEXT Bratislava and many more. She records/performs as a solo artist and with artists such as Magda Mayas, Tony Buck, Ute Wassermann, Nels Cline, among others. Parkins' recordings have been published by Important Records, Confront Recordings, Atavistic, Infrequent Seams and Creative Sources. Her work has received support from American Composers Forum, NYSCA, French-American Cultural Exchange, Q-02, MAAF, Harvestworks. Hamburg Kulturbehoerde, the Norwegian Academy of Music/Norwegian Artistic Research Programm, and the Berlin Artistic Research Grant Programme.  She has been an invited resident artist at Rauschenberg Residency in Captiva, Florida and EMS in Stockholm. In 2022-2023, she was a fellow of  the Berliner Förderprogramm Künstlerische Forschung / Berlin Artistic Research Grant Programme.
