@boris is kind of a charismatic, multifunctional weapon in the Berlin club life. His musical roots reach back to the mid 80s, when he lived in New York for four years where he absorbed the unique spirit of the seminal club Paradise Garage weekend after weekend. From the Club’s mentor Larry Levan Boris learned to believe in his musical intuition as well as a broad musical spectrum, which nowadays ranges from Disco, Hi-NRG, Post-Punk and (Kraut-) Rock to House and Techno, all of which Boris loves to throw into one set. “Music was most important for Levan. He was uncompromising and he knew how to convey it. That’s what I’m trying to achieve, too, when I’m djing.”

Many years later, Boris became a resident at Panorama Bar’s first incarnation in Berlin, where he was able to build a loyal following by playing long sets lasting until noon. “The crowd is always a lot more receptive for music at the end than at the beginning. That’s when I rather have the opportunity to present unusual stuff and that’s when I’m able to let my feelings run freely.”

After the old OstGut/Panorama Bar closed in 2003, Boris played in almost every club in Berlin, but when the follow up club Berghain opened its doors in 2004, he quickly focused on playing out here again. From 2005 till 2010 he had another musical platform, as he was taking care of the label Careless Records as an A&R. As a DJ, he is not exactly keen on refining a certain genre, but rather to push music with a certain twist.

All Night at Intention pt.2 - Live from WOMB

For this month’s DETECT we are delighted to welcome @sybersymon.

A key player in the advancement of the ‘free party’ culture that ignited in the UK in the tail end of the century, over the past three decades his constant support and efforts have helped drive London’s underground music forward as a whole. 

Whether it was sonically through the exploration of his vast array of records - spinning to the fast-growing, vast crowds that flocked to disused warehouses across the capital in the late 90’s - or in the organisation of the events as a whole, Symon’s impact cannot be understated and is still very much felt today.

It was also there where his journey began with the Stay Up Forever crew, a relationship that is as evergreen today, recently releasing his latest EP ‘Virus’ on their label as well as playing on the lineup of their 30th Anniversary event at FOLD this past March. Additionally to themselves he has had several releases on top labels including Hydraulix, 99.9 and Ripe Analogue Waveforms (RAW). 

A familiar, welcoming sight in our halls and often sighted at an UNFOLD, he brings his unique blend of upfront techno, acid and anything in between to our DETECT series. This can be heard now, via our FOLD SoundCloud.

The Essential Mix is a weekly radio show on BBC Radio 1 currently broadcast between 0:00 - 2:00 AM UK time on Saturday morning. Originally broadcast on 30 October 1993, the Essential Mix features contemporary DJs and music producers of electronic dance music. The show has been presented since its inception by Pete Tong and features an uninterrupted two-hour mix from a different artist each week, overlaid with occasional continuity announcements delivered by Tong. With a broadcast run in excess of 25 years, the Essential Mix is one of the longest-running programmes in the current BBC Radio 1 schedule, and is one of very few Radio 1 shows which is not broadcast live.
