Done for Disquiet Junto 0610

This was fun. This is mostly a quick sample of a percussive 4//lIGhT's 60 bpm Stomp bit, repeated excessively, with a tiny guitar-sounding bit from @tristan_louth_robins 's Refactored Drift. Filled out with @XHG 's Acrostic Speed Limit and some from a 4th one, but I forget.

Disquiet Junto Project 0610: Speed Limit Pt 2
The Assignment: Combine two or more pre-existing 60 BPM tracks into something new — at half the speed.

I selected two tracks that I liked, but more by incident, because I liked many (and most of them felt already finished). But with Refactored Drift from Tristan Louth-Robins (https://soundcloud.com/red_robin/disquiet_junto_0603-refactored-drift-60-bpm) and Transient Melter from ATW (https://soundcloud.com/atw/transient-melter-60bpm-disquiet-0609?in=disquiet/sets/disquiet-junto-project-0609) I had the fantasy, that they would make a nice combination of melody and sound. I was very lazy and just slowed them to half speed. I also wanted to keep the result under five minutes, and I wanted both tracks to have some kind of a solo (because the ATW track more or less forced it). I edited and recut in Reaper by taste and justification, and I ignored scales and syncopation correctness (not totally, but they are surely not always "proper"). No additional knick-knacks but some subtile FX.

Refactored Melter [disquiet0610]

For this assignment I used my own submission from last week paired with a.a.miles Key Limit which then morphs into Michele Isoni's Chirper which is finally joined by Sunbear's lovely submission. All the parts where brought into ableton, slowed down by half and then warped back to their original pitch. After it was all sequenced I then used a bunch of puremagnetic effects to give the whole thing that worn out vibe (which also resulted in some strange drop outs and flutters which i left)

Blues In Two Phases [disquiet0610]

I decided to use the pieces by Forelight, Fake Genius and RadMusicLab which I loaded into my 1010Music Bitbox. After slowing them all down to half speed and subjecting them to some granularity I basically did a couple of improv sessions, triggering portions of the three samples using the touch interface of the 1010 and then adding some melancholic notes from the Terra, along with a bit of electric shocks from the Landscape HC-TT.

The Assignment: Record a piece of music that repurposes itself as it proceeds.

After using granular delays of different kinds in https://soundcloud.com/winterer/infinity-piano-mirror I gave the hardware feedback a try. Which wasn't that easy on the Soma Cosmos drifting memory station. First I used on of the outs directly on the ins which made some unspectacular noises that are now used in the rhythmic part. Then I used a Zoom H2 Mikro and it's line out as an input for the Cosmos and cheap headphones (expecting their destruction) for the output of the signal. I "played" the "instrument" by holding the headphones near the micro. So the Cosmos really "listen's to itself". I found the recorded result too harsh and slowed this stem down to 50% and EQed the whistles, to get their character just so as a musical contribution. My wife asked for the source of the strange sounds and my answer got woven into the recording, as did my squeaking chair (again). I cut all down to 3 minutes (because I train to be short at the moment) and added some additional FX just to soften the track. It's not as meditative as the piano granular first try, but more true to the prompt.

The Cosmos Listens To Itself [disquiet0611]

In this collaboration, Radboud Mens and I explore the tension between stasis and movement. Operating within the realm of drone and electroacoustic music, we construct a sonic landscape where sustained tones and microscopic events constantly shape and reshape each other. What initially appears static reveals itself to be rich with detail: tiny acoustic shifts breathe life into apparent stillness, inviting focused and attentive listening.

The album emerged from a process where sound research, improvisation, and sound design merge. Self-built instruments, the search for timbre and texture, and recordings of the learning process itself form the foundation of these compositions. Rather than following a traditional musical structure, the result is a sonic field in which the minimal continually transforms depending on the listener’s perspective. This is a layered and handcrafted album that doesn’t narrate, but questions. Marking A Boundary With The Turning Point is not a boundary. It’s an invitation to listen differently.

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications. 

I've exhibited sound art at galleries in Los Angeles (Crewest), Manhattan (apex art), and Dubai (DUTAC), and I had a audio-visual installation at the San Jose Museum of Art as part of its 45th anniversary.

And since 1996 I've run the website Disquiet.com about the intersection of sound, art, and technology.
