A quick try out of my new and improved M4L synchronous granular synthesis instrument. All the material comes from granulating a simple drum loop. The instrument is playing a sustained chord and I controlled the parameters and modulation ranges over time. No randomness was used in this example, and the output is therefore completely deterministic. 

The largest update in the instrument since earlier versions is that it now supports audio rate modulations and feedback in the control matrix. Combinations of glisson and grain per grain pitch modulations seem very effective for the creation of sounds with strong bassy transient characteristics. Coming improvements will be on a better control over the gap time between the grains.

Live Processing/Free Improvisation

This collaboration was realised by having a conductive approach, guiding the computer into producing an electronic counterpoint. The Viola's pitch and dynamics were analysed in real time to control the instantaneous element of the electronic sound production.

Composition/Field Recordings

Urbanism was made with a process like approach to generating sound structures. Field recordings were used as input material for an analysing electronic system, that would produce rhythmical and harmonic constructions based on the source materials content.
I made field recordings in The Hague, Rotterdam and Amsterdam, specifically hectic industrial sounds, and sorted the sounds in categories based on timbre and phenomenal characteristics. A controller was used to control a couple of global parameters to make movements on a larger time scale.

Free Improvisation

A free improvisation with two different computer instruments, limited to instantaneous responding sound production. No running processes were used to produce sounds. Younes Riad has been very active in developing an electronic instrument, specifically using Joysticks as musical instruments. The instant became very important to both of us, to create specific types of complex musical phrasing and interaction.

Electroacoustic Composer and Performer. In the last years the focus of his compositions are on the phenomena connected to sound, and their relations to music. Even though recorded “real” sounds are used in his pieces, the intention of the music in no way resembles that of pure field recordings, or other intentions in which the concrete sound is preserved. It is the chemistry-like melding of the physical sound aspects in which the musical expression emerges.
