The Wounded Beat is an album of dark, moody folk set to a subtle backdrop of ethereal atmospherics. Each track paints a different shade of beautiful melancholy through soft, weighty vocals, layered guitars, keys and hazy electronics. Songwriting duo Kael Smith and Matt Herron spent nearly 3 years sculpting hours of material into 8 cohesive songs that flow seamlessly, and are devoid of any fat or excess. Recorded and mixed by Keith Kenniff of Helios, Goldmund etc., The Wounded Beat is a warm and intimate listen, with the perfect amount of optimism lurking amidst its lonely sounds.

Liars - No.1 Against The Rush

Rispah, the sophomore album by The Invisible and their first for Ninja Tune, is out now.

The album, "a love letter to grief” following the passing of singer Dave Okumu's mother, is imbued with an inevitable melancholy but defined by a sense of hope. Throughout, the band reveal their rich creativity and musicianship. Echoes run through these songs of African music (including beautifully-woven-in samples of the singers from Okumu's mother's funeral), psalm tones and devotional music, In A Silent Way-era Miles Davis, hints of minimal classical composers such as Steve Reich and the wilder more psychedelic end of hip hop and related electronic musics. 

Nothing is ever included for the sake of it, no attempt is made to patronise or sell the audience short. It's a record brimming with real emotion and restless intelligence, a record to get lost in.

Dead Can Dance have announced details of the release of a new single, Opium, through [PIAS] Recordings on 29th October 2012.

The single is taken from their recently released album, Anastasis, which came out in August. The album was their first since 1996’s Spiritchaser. 

The band also recently announced an extensive European tour, including a show at London’s Royal Albert Hall, tickets for which sold-out within 48 hours of going onsale.

Signed by 4AD and releasing their first album in 1984, the duo drew rapturous reviews for albums that spanned neo-classical and folk across time and geography, each album selling to a progressively larger audience, the emotional drama of their coming to the attention of the San Francisco ballet, Hermes Perfume and a documentary on Hitler and Stalin; likewise motion pictures such as Heat, The Crossing Guard and Baraka. Gerrard developed her own solo film soundtracks - The Gladiator and The Insider, for example – while Perry worked on solo albums such as 1999’s ‘Eye Of the Hunter’ and 2008’s ‘Ark’.

These 5 songs were originally included as part of a special 3 disc hardback book edition of Insurgentes released on my own label Headphone Dust a few months prior to KScope issuing the standard version. I had around 25 songs in total from the recording sessions, several of which were dropped because they didn't measure up (some of the other leftover pieces are now released on the Insurgentes film DVD), but I felt these 5 songs were as good as the album material, so it wasn't for lack of quality that I left them off, more to do with context and not wanting the album to be too long as a listening experience.  Instead they were included on a separate CD only available with the special edition (and later on vinyl releases).  The whole idea of the special edition was to experiment with doing something really special with the packaging that took advantage of the multi-media aspect of the project (film, photos, music), and to sell only online.  They were very expensive to make and could only be printed as a one-off edition, so I had to guess at how many to make - even then I became so convinced that I wasn't going to be able to sell them, that I priced is such that I basically lost money with every copy sold! Later on I found myself wondering if the small minority that still complained that they had been "ripped off" in only getting a CD, a CD EP, a DVD, and a ten by ten 128 page clothbound full colour book for their £34 were the same people that later sold their copy on eBay for 10 times what they paid for it.  Anyway, I digress....  Here for those that missed out on the special edition, are the bonus Insurgentes songs in full resolution WAVs, enjoy! Best, S
