Avenue Red Podcast 029 is an exclusive mix by Jori Hulkkonen, recorded live at a recent event called "My House Is Your House" at a venue called Portti, playing a vinyl-only set at a rare appearance in his hometown of Turku in Finland. Originally hailing from the rather remote Northern town of Kemi in the Lapland region (a place from which The Northern Lights can be seen on 100 days per year), Jori has consistently been a truly inspired innovator throughout a productive music career spanning over two decades, rendering a rich and eclectic discography of releases including a dozen full studio albums, dozens of singles and remix projects counting into the 200's.

A mainstay artist on Eric Morand & Laurent Garnier's (sadly now defunct) F Communications label, Jori's musical output has bled into many different genres and styles, mostly ranging from House to Techno and Electro to Ambient. He has done some conceptual artistic work too, having assembled the Acid Symphony Orchestra in 2007 - an experimental, avant-garde, 11-man techno ensemble featuring ten Roland TB-303's - performing a raw score all written, conducted and mixed by Jori.

As a DJ, Jori has played all over the world and played at hundreds of clubs and festivals throughout the years since the early 90's. His luscious style of high quality, melodic, groovin' House music was brilliantly captured on his famed Radio One Essential Mix from 2002 (https://soundcloud.com/blanche/jori-hulkkonen-essential-mix-2002-02-03) and this mix for our series has distinct echoes of that brilliant session and that era of House music in general. Hope you're ready to hear some classic and obscure House gems woven in true style by a master of the business... Enjoy the mix everyone!

"The fact that it was a party rather than something recorded at home makes it feel like a bit of hit-compilation vibe. But the crowd who were there were so young, I'd guess they'd never heard any of this classic stuff before so my idea was to show them the best of what true Deep House has to offer rather than play curiosities for the connoisseurs. Deep House in 2014 has a very different ring than it did say 15 years ago and I used this session to show them how it used to be. The tracklist is included in full - I have no secrets on this one." Probably one of the most sampled records ever! I was commissioned by Ten12 Records to do a re-edit of this classic joint in 2006. Though this is my favorite version, it was never released on the final 12-inch. I was happy to know that the surviving members of the group enjoyed this re-work. I hope you do, too!

The Skull Snaps - It's A New Day (Underdog Alt. Redux)

This is one of my personal edits that I've never planned on releasing in the Underdog series. An previously unreleased joint by Ms. Ross, it kinda grew on me the first few times I heard it. Since it wasn't a very disco friendly song, I gave it some slight extensions and a touch of dub, too. I hope that I made it a bit more tastier.

In fact, I released it some time ago as an exclusive download on the great blog site, Dilated Choonz (http://dilate.choonz.com). This being one of my favorite cuts, growing up in clublife in Chicago, I wanted to give it a slight twist. As my man from Dilated Choonz, Kevvy K said, "Leonard has wisely treated this with a great deal of respect and chosen not to take away from the original production.. instead drawing it out to make it even more haunting and hypnotic." Couldn't have said it any better!

Here's another one of my personal edits that I've never planned on releasing in the Underdog vinyl series. Kool And The Gang's Open Sesame is an unadulterated disco classic. So why do an re-edit of it, you may ask? I, actually, did it on a dare. DJ Wayne Williams of the legendary DJ collective, The Chosen Few (http://www.chosenfewdjs.com) asked me to do a re-edit set of songs that he selected, for him to debut at their now-famous House Music Festival. To be honest, I wasn't too crazy about the choices, including this one. I loved the song as it was, but he dared me to do a edit of it. So, after a more focused listening, I noticed that even though there was a 12'' version of the song, the mix wasn't that DJ friendly. And sometimes with edits, you add your own vision of the song. So, I gave it a more dubby intro and a new drum outro. I think it didn't turn out too bad! Well, you be the judge!

Kool & The Gang - Open Sesame (Underdog Edit)

Such a good song! this is a 7:25 minute extended edit version I did some time ago. The lyrics are so up to date, ths song ould be written in 20131 Michael Nesmith used to be in THE MONKEES and is the only one of the band who had a serious career afterwards. The song is from his album "Infinite Rider on the Big Dogma"
