In Red Eye, eponymous track of the EP, the first thing noticed has to be the jumpy beat,made of a UK vibe with an energetic kick pattern. The track being constructed, severalmelodic details are steadily introduced, dark horns forecast the arrival of a powerfulbassline and deliver the energy conveyed in the tune. The whole is later completed byunderwater (clin-d’oeil like to Hold Your Breath?) or space-like melodies.

Hold your breath is a slow enticing tune, with a melodic air, sprinkled with low end and long horn sounds, which add to the sinister aura of the song. The lead melody creeps steadily around the constant high hats, the vocals arrival during the break and later releasing the tension with a low end drop completed by various details as lazers-like and cowbell sounds further drive the dark vibe in this one.

After a deceptively quiet 2017, Especial picks up the pace pace by welcoming back the peroxide, youth filled Fairplay (re)version and a 2nd EP of old-skool-meets-the-new-school flavoured House and Breaks to lock, jock and spin.  

After the criminally overlooked ‘How Do You Like Me Now?’ EP – how is Classic Version not a…classic…version? – Junior gets back on the (lino) floor.  The EP starts with a look north to the ‘other city of 7 hills’ that birthed a warp’d British retake on House in his bleep-dub ode, End Of Love.  The autobiographical title belies a forward approach with his trademark echobox kick’n’hats underpinning uplifting keys and nodding bleep finger solo.   

Who to join the party then, than another man of mystery, Roy Of The Ravers.  After his debut EP on sister label Emotional Response became a most played from Aphex et al, it is only right to bring him to E’Special.  His brooding, hoover rush Remix 1 heightens the vibes with a heads down bleeping half-steppa.   Righteous! 

The flip is given over to Junior’s roots, bringing the hip-hopper back with the anthemic The Shazsquatch Goes Back Into The Woods.   No shoc(k) horror here, just more upwardly mobile breakbeat meets UK techno licks. You can hear Fairplay at one with man and machine, pushing a sound that looks back but most definitely goes forward with ‘Sunrise’ on the mind.  

To close is the swagger of EP title cut, Faxes From The Future.  Hair of the (black) dog fuses a swinging break with proto-dub-meets-Giallo stylings to rework the senses and say, now is (still) the time!    

A return to making the noise while keeping tongue planted firmly in cheek.  What are u like?  Top. Buzz.

Here's a lesson buddy,
I started working on this as soon as I built my studio in The Hague, I was in the mood for writing songs again after the instrumental album 'Driftmusic'. I recorded the vocals almost a year ago with Aux Tha Masterfader in Amsterdam, then spent a year sending it to labels, most of which either didn't reply or passed on it. I actually had one particular label in mind and I thought they would like it but I never heard from them. One label was interested but I felt weird about the deal and decided to shelve it. Then I sent it to some friends and they said that I shouldn't. But seeing as Maiovvi has become one thing, and this is a bit different I thought, fuck it, I'll just put it out under another name and Jason Priest it was. Jason Priest was a name that came to me while I was showering and it caused me to giggle. He sounded like the perfect Synthwave idiot. So yeah I finished a whole album of this stuff and I'm working on the 2nd. I don't know what will happen but maybe it will turn out ok this time. I'm also ok if it doesn't, I guess. Enjoy.

@DogsandVulturesRecords returns  with their 2nd compilation, featuring artists old and new. Newcomers to the label include Montessori, Yan Wagner, Daniel Gregori, Zakmina and Csk. Whilst existing family members  La Decadanse, MontCosmik, Vox Low and D.Y.O.R once again contribute.

It is a carefully selected compilation with sounds from all over the world. Stand out tracks include a collaboration between La Decadanse and Yan Wagner covering the Gary Numan classic - 'Are Friends Electric?' (with the owner's permission) and the always excellent @VoxLow with this track 'Listen to the Cheerer'.

@Durolabel stalwart and Mexican native Tyu (@theroommatesweb) is back on the label with two fresh new cuts that come with fantastic remixes from Bawrut and @NivAst.Tyu has released his distinctive brand of disco on Calypso Records, Trafico and his own Discos Sentimiento label. He draws on a rich sound palette and cleverly treats vocals to cook up intriguing music that has groove and character to spare.

‘Pieles’ has a haunting female vocal that brings cold wave vibes to the stark metal drum line. Piano stabs and tumbling fills add rawness and energy to this fantastic marching disco cut. Tel-Aviv based artist Niv Ast then excellently reworks it into a loose limbed, jumbled bit of disco funk with reverberating hits, echoing vocals and lots of whirring drums that keep you off balance.
