André Costello And The Cool Minors - Brighter Than Before

Working with a producer for the first time (Sam Buonovolonta, in this case), Costello’s latest release, Summer’s Best EP, is grander in scope than its swift twelve-odd minutes might suggest, with a spontaneous, live flare to the proceedings. Opener “Roll On (Spaceship)” shuttles in like a lax, acoustic take on Radiohead’s “Reckoner” before swelling forth to a thrilling conclusion complete with earthy drums stomping on a hardwood floor and cymbals bracing for a shaky landing before Costello’s accordion signals a successful landing. The companion tracks do more to affirm his affinity for Neil Young, channeling the timbre and alt-country romanticism of Young’s early ‘70s work. A sulking bassline slowly plows through “Hear, Say” with minimal percussion nudging it along, whereas a highlight of “Solar Flares” is Buonovolonta’s immaculate drum work. Solar Flares is a cosmic depiction of heartache and bodily solace. Don’t let the EP title fool you, these aren’t songs to embrace beachside with a cool drink and The Crying of Lot 49 (I've never read it); they slyly saddle up and take you along darker terrain, portending some greater evil but keeping the cards closer to heart.
