Foamy dub(techno)

Disciple of the god Apollo, Terpsichore was the Muse of the dance, and it was known to be the most enigmatic of the nine Greek muses.
She was the mother of the sirens, and she would lure sailors to shipwreck on their island with their music and hypnotic, beautiful singing.

Terpsichore has been invoked as a metaphor for rhythm and ordered movement in the universe.
The planets orbit the sun and the sun, with other stars, orbits the center of the Milky Way galaxy. The planets go through the Milankovitch cycles in which their orbits around the sun adjust in very regular, periodic, or rhythmic, ways.

Terpsichore’s influence goes beyond just the humane, as It can also be seen in the observable universe.
She is now the Muse not just of human dance but also the cosmic dance in which the whole universe participates.

Taken from "cv313, Federsen - Skyspace EP (Alt/Dub)". Out November 22nd 2024. Buy here :
https://altdub.bandcamp.com/music

Echospace Detroit’s cv313 aka Stephen Hitchell joins forces with Federsen for the second instalment on the latter’s newly minted Alt Dub label with the ‘Skyspace’ EP.Over the past decade and a half San Francisco based artist Federsen has been making his mark on the dub infused techno and house sound, delivering his vintage tape delay and analogue gear driven sound via the likes of Mixcult, Greyscale, Lempuyang and Ohm Series among others. In May this year Federsen inaugurated his own Alt Dub label with a split EP from himself and Hidden Sequence, and here the story continues following the split format with more original material from himself and cv313, accompanied by both artists remixing each other to run alongside their originals across the 12’’.
cv313’s original mix of ‘Skycrossing’ opens the release and in typical Hitchell fashion treats us to eight and a half minutes of deep soundscapes, spiralling dub echoes, muted drums and a subtly unfurling feel throughout. Federsen’s ‘Dub’ remix of ‘Skycrossing’ then follows, offering a more refined and reduced feel with subby pulsations and crisp drums intertwined with dubby fragments of the original tracks.
On the flip-side Federsen’s original ‘Skyway’ leads, employing a sturdy rhythm section with nuanced dub echoes and rumbling low-end swells. To conclude the release cv313 offers up his ‘Dub’ interpretation of ‘Skyway’, stamping his mark on things with phasing atmospherics, intricate oscillations and fluttering percussion.

Cinematic techno from the mysterious Dutch producer.

Some of the best techno is both beautiful and austere. On an old Robert Hood or Sandwell District track, the industrial clank of percussion gives way to bursts of melody where you can hear the ghosts singing inside the machines. It's this version of techno that the Dutch producer nthng has been honing since the mid-2010s, from his debut on Lobster Theremin's Mörk to records for Delsin.

His take on techno, borrowing from trance, dub and ambient, has always hewed close to the edge of the dance floor, that space where dancers keep their eyes shut and get lost in the shadows.

For RA.1059, he delivers an hour from the most visceral and cinematic end of his sound. The opening suite of four of his own tracks is nothing (pun intended) short of breathtaking: sky-searching IDM turns into chromatic techno, followed by a dubstep-referencing vocal track with a rolling break that hits with the weight of a guillotine, before he lets loose a slightly syncopated barnstormer. He never lets the drama and tension slip across the remaining 48 minutes, ending on his own piece of paranoid and skeletal drum & bass.

Every tenth release for boe recordings represents a significant achievement for the vinyl-focused record label and the numerical milestone is celebrated with a special release. The thirtieth instalment, BOE XXX is a true family affair with four recognisable boe artists and two new members added in.

Well overdue a return to boe recordings is the mercurial Welsh talent Leif, fresh from dropping his second stunning LP. “That Ice Cream Tune” features those atmospherics and deft percussion touches that Leif is well known for. Moving away from the organic sounds of late Leif opts for a greater focus on the electronics: shuffling and stuttering arpeggiated leads and metallic syncopated hats and snares. Spoken word hums and an ambient lead add that beautiful sheen to the production.

Of the back of solo EPs on boe and Contrast Wax, label boss Ben slots in a deep electro cut, Spectral gate. The soft but weighty kick and snappy analog snares provide the back bone, the delicate & ever shifting landscape of the synth riffs come in and out of focus before the throaty Moog bass takes over. Glossy touches of sweeping synths and a sparkly lead cap off a modern take on a classic electro sound.

Nick Lawson returns to boe with yet another classy example of high-end deep house. Wharf Aquatics bubbles and grooves along with its effervescent dub delayed leads and it’s liquid bass movements. Late night head music.

A closely linked artist to the label, Life Recorder finally gets his debut on boe with a low slung grooving tech houser, Butterflies. Aimed squarely at the dance floor this no-nonsense driving cut pumps and grooves for 7 minutes with its persistent Detroit style hook line.

The D side plays host to newcomer Reedale Rise with Quadrex, a Detroit-esque electro track with DBX style hypnotism thrown in for good measure. Space age themes and Drexiycan like pads play off against shuffling percussion mechanics. At the break, the track takes a turn, the hypotising vocal takes over with dub delays and filtered frequencies take the melody to a trance-inducing finale.

Finally, after many recent contributions to boe 12”s, the steel city techno-forging don John Shima lays down a stunning piece of ambient work in the vein of B12 and those classic industrial sounds called Liberation.

Newworldaquarium - Chubby Knuckles EP [ape05]

Narrowly escaping the tragic events of 61 Cygni E, Microthol have landed on a previously undiscovered planet in the Arcturus system. Aided by a 3D-printed army of nanobots they have managed to subdue a dominant local species of cute but murderous feline shapeshifters. Enraged xenoethicists and ailurophiles have crowdfunded an invasion fleet to return the rogue operators to earth.
