We all have a role to play. We all have *something* to offer.

Days after the racist mass shooting in Charleston in 2015, I’d been lying on the floor of my studio in tears about racial violence. The words of Martin Luther King, Jr. swam through my thoughts: “We must either learn to live together as brothers and sisters or perish as fools.”

Those words had never felt so salient. And it felt like the thing I needed to tell the world (I wouldn’t find MY OWN message til the following year).

But *how* would I play a part in bringing that message to people who needed to hear it? I didn’t have any activist experience or a social justice education...

I looked across the room and saw my guitar: *that’s* what I had. And I began to write songs again, but these songs were different from the romantic ballads that dominated my catalog before. That day I began *trying* to write songs about freedom. It’d take me a couple of years to get the hang of it.
