Island Symphony Movement 2/4

Performance by 'George W. Welch', featuring Hugh McDowell, solo cello. Recorded in 1987.

'Eastward Oh' is a mini cello concerto, written for the late Hugh McDowell (pictured) accompanied by the 'George W. Welch' ensemble (clarinet, tuba, vibes, marimba, percussion, piano, violin, viola). The première was given at Lauderdale House in London in 1987. This recording was made at Royal Holloway College later that year. The piece was also performed in Germany, conducted by Ladislav Kupkovic and broadcast on Hannover Radio in 1991.

The programme note for the piece consists of a map of Cornwall and Devon with an overlaid spiral, beginning at Westward Ho! and ending at a mechanical museum. This reflects something of the mystery and emotional journey of the piece. There is a repeated motif throughout which sets the words (unvoiced) "Thou art nought to me" from the poems of Sappho as translated by Helen Bantock.
