Blind Jesus by Andrew Leslie Hooker and Stefano Pilia debuts with a record that, according to this writer, is one of the best works of avant-rock heard recently: unravelled stuttering in the vein of Storm & Stress fall from crumbling gorges of tape loops, caracoling flights in the foreground interrupted with improvised retro-folk, wanton porno-concrète jokes arm-in-arm with strained ecstatic drones, followed by melancholic acoustic crackling, industrial creaking, soulful moans, obstacular Supreme Dicks style songs... The duo's language is to some extent recognizable "in the style of", but these five tracks improvised with tapes, guitar, samples and effects are sewn together and assembled with a rare sense of fantasy. This CD is concerned with with the blues, above all collecting and transmitting its essence, the music starting from a blues core and expanding towards marvelous suburbs. Tapes, samples, effects, concrete recordings and feedback, as well as piano, guitars and vocals interact in "Blind Jesus", the duo formed by Stefano Pilia and Andrew Leslie Hooker (a surname more 'blues' than this doesn't exist ). But it is certainly not for Hooker's surname, or even for the name of the project, that I write about a blues core. The fact is that the CD is impregnated with the flavors of black music par excellence, starting with the lyrics that are "... a free assemblage of old blues songs collected by Alan Lomax ...", although the whole expands in the direction of a sick and distorted psychedelia.

AllAoneOnASmallIslandSomewhereInTheMiddleOfNowhere was originally conceived as a sound score for ballet/butoh dancer/choreographer Melissa Pasut. It is fundamentally an electroacoustic elaboration of a brief no-input mixing board improvisation in which the interaction of extrapolated tones (imprecisely tuned intervals) are subjected to all manner of musique concrète tape manipulation, and then layered in order to generate a multitude of difference and combination tones, phasing, beating and aural perceptions or illusions. This last aspect is of extreme importance to a human body moving within and throughout an architectural space into which this music is being diffused, as the frequencies will alter drastically depending on its position to the sound source. For a wandering audience and dancers especially, this creates a condition of reflected kinesis, an animated feedback loop between cell, sinew, bone and sonic vibration.

Turntable de/reconstruction of J.S.Bach Complete Organ Works played by Jean-Jacques Grunenwald (Resonances, 1962).
An impromtu improvisation that took place during the intermission between two, butoh-inspired dance works...OhFatherOhKing (with Melissa Pasut) and LoveMe (with MP & Rachel Sweeney), both of which comprised the Anoikis Contemporary Dance production entitled HowlingIntoTheSun, performed at the Capstone Theatre, Liverpool in 2016.
The recording was captured in true audio-vérité style, with the stereo microphone of an analogue VCR camera positioned in an open control booth in the centre of the auditorium...hence the negligible sound quality and the concrète noise of a restless audience (which indeed lends a somewhat surreal, vaguely disquieting atmosphere to the piece).
There has been no editing or post-production of any kind.
