This is what's known in music-industry parlance as a "novelty song."  It became popular about 15 seconds before rock 'n roll began taking over the radio waves from big bands and big-band singers.  Both Perry Como and Cryin' Johnnie Ray recorded the song in 1954.  I think the Perry Como version (arrangement by Mitchell Ayres) is more authentically a mambo in style.

Now:  there is a step in the mambo (also in the cha-cha) called "the chase," in which the dancers alternately turn away from each other.  So when Papa is facing away from Mama, she really is "nowhere in sight."

Supplemental lyrics were required, so as to avoid the dread repeat.  Also, in 1954 it was okay to say Papa and Mama were "feelin' so gay with it," as they danced the mambo.  Doesn't make the cut these days.  I changed it "makin' their play with it."

Pro tip:  the mambo is fun, but a very sensual dance.  Lots of hip-thrusting action.  (I love the Latin dances.)  So when the hips are thrust nearly out of their sockets, it's appropriate to go OOOMPH!! ☻
