 SEDO is collection of half improvised compositions created from graphic scores using altered blues scale, blues scale and locrian mode in variations. 

It is an intimate invitation in a sound world and harmony that represents the composers personal journey.

Nature and Nostalgia:  Latvian pianist and composer Ieva Dubova releases experimental neo-classical album ‘Reverie’ (1 August)

Inspired by nature, sensuality, and childhood memories from her Baltic motherland, Latvian pianist Ieva Dubova’s debut solo album ‘Reverie’ is a stunning showcase of original post-classical compositions infused with cinematic melodies and digital ambient textures. 

‘Reverie’, originally named ‘Ainavas’ (meaning ‘landscapes’), begins in the present springtime before taking listeners on a musical journey into the past, back to Dubova’s home village in Gaujiena, Latvia. The concept for the album was sparked by Ojārs Vācietis’ poem, ‘What Childhood Is To Us’. Dubova performed a set of 10 pieces inspired by the poem as an associate artist for the Baltic Memory and Landscapes Exhibition held in London back in January, before the lockdown.

“Many of the pieces are both melodic and ambient, incorporating prepared piano sounds and electronic delays. The experimental nature of my sound is hard to define, but sits somewhere in the realm of new age classical, or perhaps film music.” — IEVA DUBOVA

From the haunting depth of 'Åvu Åvu’ with its ethereal film score nuance, to the playful brightness of ‘Innocence' offset by a gentle drum march and childlike sense of wonder, each track reveals a different side of Dubova’s character. Overall, ’Reverie’ creates an atmosphere that draws the listener into the pianist’s mysterious inner workings and explores themes of nature and nostalgia with visually evocative song titles (‘First Snow’, ‘Little Game in the Dusk’, ‘This Spring’).

‘This Spring’ was recently featured on the women-led compilation ‘Her Indoors’, by the Women Composers Collective, to fundraise for domestic violence victims. Dubova is also collaborating with choreographer Anita Garcia Grosse to develop a visual dance piece for ‘Wondering’.

Dubova has described the process of making ‘Reverie’ as a safe space that allows her to disengage from the world and immerse herself in the joy of creation. The album, she says, “just feels like who I am”. More generally, Dubova’s creative influences as a composer are external and tactile, whereas her creative process remains self-reflective and deeply internal.

“For me, music is the way to show the world my feelings, to communicate with them, but stay intimate. I’m influenced by Baltic folk music and nature. Sensual things like smells, feeling the wind. I write things without an outline.” — IEVA DUBOVA
