“It all began when one of us was Leaving Laurel”.

For Pierce and Gordon of Leaving Laurel, their music is a story of an old friendship that over many years, almost accidentally, blossomed into a musical collaboration.  Friends on the internet first, and eventually roommates in Los Angeles, the pair spent years together making their own separate brands of dance music, long before ever collaborating with one another. Gordon was one half of bass heavy duo Botnek, whilst Pierce found fame and toured the world with his solo project.

One day in Laurel Canyon, California, the pair were sharing their own unfinished music with one another. Pierce had an idea for a demo of Gordon’s, which spawned an impromptu writing session lasting the rest of the day.  Elated by what had just happened, they continued to write together over the coming weeks, but just as they were getting new momentum, Pierce had to head back to his home on the east coast.  The final song they wrote together before his flight was called ‘Leaving Laurel’. The music Pierce and Gordon made together is rich with emotion, densely packed with atmosphere and often featured Gordon’s own gentle vocals. 

Pierce always envisioned the music they made together in California as an album, and after having released many of their early songs over the past year on Anjunadeep, they set out to finish everything they had started during that time. In revisiting the rest of their ideas from that era, they had realized - it all felt like one moment in time. One feeling. One chapter. The pair finished their debut album at the start of 2021, just prior to a horrible tragedy.

Pierce passed away in April of this year after a tragic struggle with his mental health. This album is dedicated to his memory, and has come to represent much more than two friends making music together in the Laurel Canyon neighbourhood of Los Angeles. The album announcement comes with today’s release of ‘Winter In The Woods’, a track inspired by the duo’s time isolated in the woods of Connecticut & Vermont. Pierce’s struggles were very private, and with this album Gordon and Pierce’s brother and manager Griff want to let the world know simply this: 

It’s ok to not be ok.  

It’s for anyone who can relate to his pain, and to know you are not alone.

‘Erased Dreams’, the first full-length, low-tempo project from Helsinki based artist Yotto.

Aptly regarded as a man of many sounds by Billboard, Yotto’s ‘Erased Dreams’ also marks Reflections’ debut LP release; an 8 track ambient journey, revealing a new side to one of Anjuna’s most illustrious producers. Well-known for his thunderous DJ sets and deep, bass-heavy house productions, ‘Erased Dreams’ may seem like a departure from Yotto’s usual style, but he’s always made music like this. With Reflections, he finally found a home for it.

Throughout his sparkling career, which includes a Billboard #1 LP and remixes of tracks by Joris Voorn, Gorillaz and Coldplay, Yotto has produced ambient music to help him look inward and re-charge his creative battery. But when COVID hit, his inner world took over. “At first, I was being really productive with club music. But then after a while I started making something completely opposite.” Yotto found himself exploring a different form of expression, with no plan other than to create. But when he put the tracks side-by-side in a playlist he recognised a synergy, and the outline of the project began to take shape. The result is more of a continuous soundscape than an album; an ethereal and dreamy experience designed to accompany the listener as they turn inward and drift away. If club music is a form of escape, then this is too – but instead of turning outward, we lose ourselves inward.

The first single is ‘Silhouette’. It’s a melancholy, atmospheric track with hints of ’80s nostalgia and smooth as glass vocals from Sansa. The track conjures up images of vast and endless landscapes; the sense of space enhanced by sparse chord-changes and field recordings of heavy rain. ‘Silhouette’ is so human it feels like an extension of an emotion, and Yotto says the idea came to him like a dream. A sound drifted towards him one day and he caught it by the tail and built on top of it until it became the entity he envisioned. ’It’s slow and steady and it grows. I think the beauty lies in the simplicity of it.”

Club music will always be at the core of Yotto’s work, but his ambient catalogue will no longer sit in the shadows. Together, these parallel forms of expression don’t dilute Yotto’s artistry; they make it even stronger.

Following the release of their EP ‘Welcome Home’, British duo Fluida return to the label with their three-track EP ‘Phoenix’. Since their label debut on Anjunadeep Explorations 03, the UK duo have been supported by Joris Voorn, Lee Burridge and Sasha, and released on labels including Get Physical, Kindisch and Fatboy Slim’s Southern Fried Records; in addition to a series of special vinyl-only cuts via their own label.

Title track ‘Phoenix’ opens the EP, leading with an echoing vocal sample and a piano lead. ‘Trialing Jade’ features percussive-laden rhythms whilst EP closer ‘Afterglow’ compromises a meticulously-crafted drum section that showcases Fluida’s production style.

Rising star of the electronic scene Tom Marshall, aka Marsh, unveils ‘Blue’, the second single from his forthcoming artist album ‘Endless’.

‘Blue' features English singer-songwriter Leo Wood, who previously collaborated with Tom on 'My Stripes' and 'Over & Over'; two of the most sought-after tracks from Marsh’s last album ‘Lailonie'. On this new offering, Marsh showcases both his love of broken beats, and his characteristic melodic production style that consistently melds so seamlessly with Leo’s dreamy vocals.

Marsh’s upcoming LP ‘Endless’ is accompanied by an impressive album tour. Phase one comprises 25 dates across North and South America, starting on January 13 in Denver, Colorado. Before then, however, Tom will also be appearing on 13 Anjunadeep tour dates across Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

‘Endless’ is out on February 3, 2023 on Anjunadeep.

Focussing on an increasingly deep house-centred style, German producer Martin Roth returns to Anjunadeep with appropriately titled "Beautiful Life" and the sultry "Make Love To Me Baby". 

Clearly containing some of the DNA from Martin's previous outing "Deep Style", "Beautiful Life" is laced with languid, downtuned grooves and layers moody interludes, softly echoing vocal fades and some gorgeous swathes of synth to conjure an edgy deep house number. 

Offering a more sunny contrast, the sultry and seductive sounds of "Make Love To Me Baby" blend chilled out grooves with a late-night soulful feel and some classic, understated piano house keys.
