Mechanical Thaw

Sextet is a work for three strings and three woodwinds, composed during my senior year at Yale University.  It was written for the Argento Ensemble, a contemporary ensemble based out of New York.  At the time, I had been experimenting with more atonal procedures and trying to push and expand the range of my harmonic palette.  With this work, I was interested in fusing some of these elements with a more traditional melody in the vein of someone like Samuel Barber.  This melody, which is presented by the oboe at the outset of the piece, recurs two other times throughout the work, each time incorporating more and more dissonance.   Ultimately, the melody fractures and all that is left is the aftermath and an uncanny reminder of what the melody once was.

What's Next?

Sing Sweetly, Run Swiftly is a piece that deals with two types of music.  The first is nostalgic and still. The second is boisterous and ebullient and it stands as a contrast to the stillness of the first.  The piece, then, is about the interaction between these two types of music.  This piece was commissioned by the Lyra Society of Philadelphia.

My name is Andy and I am a composer based in Boston.  I was born in Washington D.C. and grew up in Columbia, MD outside of Baltimore.  I have always been fascinated by music and sound.  I started playing the trombone in elementary school and then became obsessed with the guitar in high school.
