Samosa Records quickly follows up the first volume of Afrikano treats with Volume 2; a veritable melting pot of Afro beats and rhythms packed in to an exceptional four tracker.

On the B-side Leslie Lello ups the tempo with ‘Alcyone’. Solid, punchy bass, driving guitar and gorgeous piano riff and vocal combine with a synth lead you absolutely need in your life. The track morphs and transforms into a full-on (almost housey) stomper; nailing its tribal colours to the mast with intent. A real beast of a tune.

Golden Gate is a new disco and house project from Leeds, UK. Inspired by their favourite LP, Masters at Work’s classic Nuyorican Soul project, DJ/producer Tee Cooper and songwriter/vocalist Harper Lake wanted to make music that sounded like classic house and disco, played live but produced for the club.

They assembled a cast of their favourite vocalists and musicians from across the UK and the world and started Golden Gate. Their mission is to make disco and house music with real instruments and real people, inspired by the old but sounding new.

For this ReVision, I took on a rather contemporary song that was written as an homage to the greats of a previous music production generation. This particular era of contemporary popular music saw these influential producers coming into the vocation of record production just as many revolutionary new tools, instruments, and technologies were emerging.

This era of technological experimentation and the cross-genre artists that graduated from it would go on to create some of the most influential popular music of all time—simultaneously expanding the sonic palette of the modern music dialect—through the heavy use of drum machines and synthesizers.

Bruno Mar’s “Finesse" is directly inspired from the “New Jack Swing" sound—birthed with Janet Jackson's "Nasty”(Produced by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis)—pioneered by Teddy Riley, whose rise to fame excreted such dominance over the popular sound of American Black Music, that there really wasn’t an artist in the categories of Hip-Hop, Rap, and R&B who wasn’t at least attempting to capitalize on the confluence.

Off his 2016 album, ‘24K Magic’—produced by Shampoo Press & Curl (Bruno Mars, Philip Lawrence, Ari Levine) and The Stereotypes (Jonathan Yip, Ray Romulus, Jeremy Reeves, Ray Charles McCullough II)—Bruno Mars' track places a fat Model D bassline front and center on top of the highly swung drum programming. 

I employed all the standard instrumentation that would be found in the production studios of this genre era, centered around Roland’s TR-808, JX-3P, and from the rackmount and tabletop synth units like the Roland XV-3080, JV-880, and JV-1080.

A preeminent artist of Chicago's 3rd wave, Andrew Emil is one of house music’s most staunch stalwarts. A concert-trained percussionist since age 11, he earned a chair in his native Kansas City Symphony before eventually moving to Chicago. 

As a traditional musician, Andrew Emil has worked as a keyboardist, arranger, and an orchestrator on recording sessions and productions, cutting his teeth at the former Chicago Trax Recording Studios. 

Credited on over 200+ recordings, his composition and studio productions have ranged from concert works and sound design to film scoring stages and hundreds of releases of electronic music productions. 

After a life in live music performance, from orchestra percussion sections to punk rock ensembles, he crafted a reputation for House Music productions in Chicago under his own name, as well as Broadway & Wilson, and Uptown Tones. 

One of the earlier innovators of the “Jackin House” genre under the Broadway & Wilson moniker with Jeff Bloom, Andrew is never content to stay in one place or style of musical thought for very long. 

He is the only recording artist to do production work simultaneously for Derrick Carter’s Classic Music Company, Mark Farina’s Great Lakes Audio, Gene Farris’ Farris Wheel Recordings, and four-time GRAMMY nominee Steve “Silk” Hurley’s S&S Records.

A string of double-digit singles for prominent labels, including remixes for artists such as Common, Kanye West, Little Louie Vega, Jamie Principle, Steve "Silk" Hurley, Iz & Diz, Fast Eddie, Shalamar, Roland Clark, David Morales, Colette, Amp Fiddler, JT Donaldson, and Gene Farris, to name a few. 

2012 saw the emergence of his epithet, Change Request, with the Change Theory EP on four play music. This new persona allowed the freedom to explore hybrids of mid-tempo live instrument focused jazz-dance-fusion. 

Following this release was “After All” on Seasons Recordings, with another single thereafter featuring house music icon, Chez Damier, “I Wanna Go Back”, including a remarkable rework from Glenn Underground, on Glenview Records. 

The ever-growing collection of songs and musical dialogue eventually led to the conceptual album series from Change Request. Each full-length effort containing a completely separate story and scored via its own unique incidental subtext. 

Emil created AstraVox Music with the award-winning Los Angeles-based composer, Mr. Nathaniel, as a home for his increasing catalog of incidental dramatic musical compositions.
