Madonna | Live To Tell (Change Request ReVision)

For this ReVision, I went after a top-three song from this artist and one that is considered the most exceptional ballad she ever wrote. 

"Live to Tell" is the lead single from Madonna's third studio album, 1986's True Blue and It became Madonna's third number-one single in the US, and her second number-one that is featured in a film after "Crazy for You."

Written by Patrick Leonard for the score of the film Fire with Fire, the instrumental was shown to Madonna, who decided to use it for her husband Sean Penn's film At Close Range. She then wrote the lyrics and co-wrote/produced them with Leonard. 

I have always loved this instrumental for its classic 80s instrumentation, synth choices, drum machines, and iconic early digital reverb.

The drum sound on this recording makes use of a recently developed technique at that time of gating the spatial effects returns of the drum tracks. The gate opens and closes quickly giving a nurse of huge transient and attack, but cuts the sustain and removes the decay of the reverb as to make the drums, especially the snare, jump out of the speakers. 

This intentional use of a noise age as a creative device in this manner is a now-standard recording technique called gated-reverb. However, this technique was invented by accident while producer Steve Lillywhite and engineer Hugh Padgham were recording Phil Collins drum tracks on the song "Intruder" off Peter Gabriel's third studio album. 

Collins would go on to make this sound a centerpiece of his work with almost every single hit record he made after this featuring this gated reverb drum sound. 

For this ReVision, I actually for the first time, used parts of the original record, as I want to re-arrange this song for some time now. 

Eventide's SP2016, the Lexicon224, and the EMT250 reverb is THE sound of the era as some of the first rack-mounted studio processors were being introduced. The entire tone of 1980s recordings arts can pretty much be summed up with just these three spatial effects alone. 

I added a relevant rhythm section and drum programming, using these classic reverbs, added many more synthesis layers and harmonic textures, some string melodies, rhythm guitar, and a re-written keyboard part in the section in the bridge with a classic Yamaha DX7.

Felipe Gordon from Bogota is one of THE names right now in the jazz infected house & broken beat scene that is growing so much these days. This is his 2nd EP on Toy Tonics and its a step forward for him musically: he started to include more vocals and worked with colombian vocalist Paula Pedraza. Gordon’s music is special: with his background as a colombian (with that great heritage of musicianship that the country has) and as a indie rock musician (he used to play in bands for years) - he has a very own vibe. His tracks have much more groove than lot of the sample based stuff you get to hear currently.. and his production style is more variable and musically interesting than lots of other stuff outside. Check these 4 new tracks. Especially the 2nd tool, wich adds some freshness to the current disco vibe: Binging in a punkfunk bassline that could have been made in 2005 from Disco-Not-Disco artists like Chicken Lips, Headman or Playgroup. A preeminent artist of Chicago's 3rd wave, Andrew Emil is one of house music’s most staunch stalwarts. A concert-trained percussionist since age 11, he earned a chair in his native Kansas City Symphony before eventually moving to Chicago. 

As a traditional musician, Andrew Emil has worked as a keyboardist, arranger, and an orchestrator on recording sessions and productions, cutting his teeth at the former Chicago Trax Recording Studios. 

Credited on over 200+ recordings, his composition and studio productions have ranged from concert works and sound design to film scoring stages and hundreds of releases of electronic music productions. 

After a life in live music performance, from orchestra percussion sections to punk rock ensembles, he crafted a reputation for House Music productions in Chicago under his own name, as well as Broadway & Wilson, and Uptown Tones. 

One of the earlier innovators of the “Jackin House” genre under the Broadway & Wilson moniker with Jeff Bloom, Andrew is never content to stay in one place or style of musical thought for very long. 

He is the only recording artist to do production work simultaneously for Derrick Carter’s Classic Music Company, Mark Farina’s Great Lakes Audio, Gene Farris’ Farris Wheel Recordings, and four-time GRAMMY nominee Steve “Silk” Hurley’s S&S Records.

A string of double-digit singles for prominent labels, including remixes for artists such as Common, Kanye West, Little Louie Vega, Jamie Principle, Steve "Silk" Hurley, Iz & Diz, Fast Eddie, Shalamar, Roland Clark, David Morales, Colette, Amp Fiddler, JT Donaldson, and Gene Farris, to name a few. 

2012 saw the emergence of his epithet, Change Request, with the Change Theory EP on four play music. This new persona allowed the freedom to explore hybrids of mid-tempo live instrument focused jazz-dance-fusion. 

Following this release was “After All” on Seasons Recordings, with another single thereafter featuring house music icon, Chez Damier, “I Wanna Go Back”, including a remarkable rework from Glenn Underground, on Glenview Records. 

The ever-growing collection of songs and musical dialogue eventually led to the conceptual album series from Change Request. Each full-length effort containing a completely separate story and scored via its own unique incidental subtext. 

Emil created AstraVox Music with the award-winning Los Angeles-based composer, Mr. Nathaniel, as a home for his increasing catalog of incidental dramatic musical compositions.
