Birth of a Star

A kind of electronic folk thingy experimenting with the Freezr audio sequencer. The title is taken from my failing memories of the lyric to The Lark In The Morning, by Steeleye Span, which I can't now find any verification of online.

Review: 

Danny "80s Child" Worrall's Masterworks Music label seems to specialize in delivering tasty reworks of long forgotten '80s soul, boogie and P-funk gems. This latest EP from Brooklyn-based P-Sol is packed to the rafters with this kind of gear. He does an admirable job balancing the needs of the dancefloor with giving the original material due reverence, as you'd expect from someone of his vast experience. There's some slow, chugging, synth-laden disco sweetness ("Every Night"), a dash of breezy '80s dancefloor soul (the filters and bumpin' beats of "Real Love"), and a lesson in the power of dubbed-out horns and eyes-closed synth solos (the admirable "Do Ya"). In other words, plenty of tried-and-tested material for those who dig synth-heavy disco grooves.

Kiu D & MKV - Funky People (Labor of Love dub)

HB017: Kiu D - Love Player EP feat MKV

Following recent excursions on Masterworks Music and Rebel Hearts, Kiu D returns to Hotbox Boogie, a label he's graced multiple times over the years. As usual, the four tracks on offer - three of which were co-produced by pal MKV - blend extensive samples from original disco and boogie records, with original musical elements. He begins with the clipped guitars, familiar vocal samples, and throbbing nu-disco synth bass of "Funky People", before delivering a breezier chunk of cheery disco-house in the shape of "Love Player". "Spank" puts a heavyweight disco rocket under the backside of Jimmy 'Bo' Horne classic "Spank", before the package is completed by the Bohannon-in-dub throb of "Funky People (Labour of Love Dub)".

With previous releases on Discoweey, Samosa Records and Tropical Disco Records, our italian Stallion 'Paul Older' strikes back on the Mandrill EP series with his 'Mondodisco EP' delivering 4 disco jewels influenced by music from all around the world. To start this journey 'Monkey Funkey' arrives with heavy trumpet riffs, retro organ chords and cheerful vocals making it a happy melody ready to hit the dancefloor. After it comes 'Los Caramelos' taking us back to the 70s decade in Spain with colorful flamenco-driven guitars, spanish vocals filled with joy and a classic disco bassline making it a unique blend perfect for peak hours. On the other side 'Mais' delivers a Brazilian boogie taste to the release with exceptional Portuguese vocals, smooth rhodes and classic samba on the rhytm section. To close this magical journey 'Akisakisana' takes us all the way to the African jungle with outstanding percussions, funky guitar riffs and womanly chants making it a very exotic rework you cannot miss.

Andrew Emil // Change Request 

A preeminent artist of Chicago's 3rd wave, Andrew Emil is one of house music’s most staunch stalwarts. A concert-trained percussionist since age 11, he earned a chair in his native Kansas City Symphony before eventually moving to Chicago. 

As a traditional musician, Andrew Emil has worked as a keyboardist, arranger, and an orchestrator on recording sessions and productions, cutting his teeth at the former Chicago Trax Recording Studios. 

Credited on over 200+ recordings, his composition and studio productions have ranged from concert works and sound design to film scoring stages and hundreds of releases of electronic music productions. 

After a life in live music performance, from orchestra percussion sections to punk rock ensembles, he crafted a reputation for House Music productions in Chicago under his own name, as well as Broadway & Wilson, and Uptown Tones. 

One of the earlier innovators of the “Jackin House” genre under the Broadway & Wilson moniker with Jeff Bloom, Andrew is never content to stay in one place or style of musical thought for very long. 

He is the only recording artist to do production work simultaneously for Derrick Carter’s Classic Music Company, Mark Farina’s Great Lakes Audio, Gene Farris’ Farris Wheel Recordings, and four-time GRAMMY nominee Steve “Silk” Hurley’s S&S Records.

A string of double-digit singles for prominent labels, including remixes for artists such as Common, Kanye West, Little Louie Vega, Jamie Principle, Steve "Silk" Hurley, Iz & Diz, Fast Eddie, Shalamar, Roland Clark, David Morales, Colette, Amp Fiddler, JT Donaldson, and Gene Farris, to name a few. 

2012 saw the emergence of his epithet, Change Request, with the Change Theory EP on four play music. This new persona allowed the freedom to explore hybrids of mid-tempo live instrument focused jazz-dance-fusion. 

Following this release was “After All” on Seasons Recordings, with another single thereafter featuring house music icon, Chez Damier, “I Wanna Go Back”, including a remarkable rework from Glenn Underground, on Glenview Records. 

The ever-growing collection of songs and musical dialogue eventually led to the conceptual album series from Change Request. Each full-length effort containing a completely separate story and scored via its own unique incidental subtext. 

Emil created AstraVox Music with the award-winning Los Angeles-based composer, Mr. Nathaniel, as a home for his increasing catalog of incidental dramatic musical compositions.
