One of my favorite MC's of all time is Mos Def. The man was so damn fluid on the mic and actually cared about the things he talked about. A true poet. Growing up, it was very important for me to see people who were actually intelligent while still retaining that cool factor. I think many times in the black community, you equate a person being extremely well-read as either snobby and elitist or a straight sell-out with no self-awareness. Mos was able to shatter those misconceptions beautifully. The man is an award-winning actor, true mc, poet, and producer. And he does all of them with skill and a nobility. This is the re-mixtape I did with AZ (he hosts it) back in 2007. This was my first mixtape where I produced all the music. I just chopped up all the loops in Pro-Tools, no drums were added except on one track. I wanted it to sound like "what if AZ, Al Green & producer Willie Mitchell did an album together?" This mixtape got me invited into the studio to work on Wu-Tang's "Chamber Music" album, which started my career producing Wu-Tang tracks, albums with Ghostface and working as Rza's A&R while he ran Soul Temple. This AZ mix contains 16 'Soul Inspired' Remixes of Classic AZ Material. The physical release came with a bonus disc of unreleased material by AZ, but since I had nothing to do with that, I didn't include here.
