The new, bubbly indie-pop song from Piano-ace Andrew North. “I came up with this song when I was hanging out with my 5 year old son, literally building a fort in the woods at the park near our house.” says North, “I am so grateful to my children for bringing more perspective to my life. I was getting lost in the fog of just making ends meet in day to day life, and building a fort with my son just felt so pure, you know? I want more of that, and I think I’m not alone.”

Beneath The Moon

Acclaimed keyboardist Andrew North’s newest single, “Satori 89,” finds him in new territory. His third new song in as many months is a sharp departure from March’s brooding “Beneath the Moon.” The track features a heavily chorused electric piano lead playing a twisting melody line that winds through key changes. “I recorded the melody with my right hand and bass part with my left together at the same time because I really wanted to give it an organic feel.” says North. “John Scofield and Charlie Hunter are two of my absolute favorite artists and I wanted to show some of that side of my music in this track.” 

The track is named for a flash of insight North had while driving on Vermont’s Interstate 89. “I was coming through Richmond on one of those beautiful summer days, where the landscape is just insanely green, and I just had one of those moments where everything just clicked and made sense. It passed pretty quickly, but the seed for the song was planted. The Buddhist term for a moment like that is “Satori.”

Andrew North Battles Anxiety and Insecurity in Indie Banger ‘The Crocodile’ - Releasing May 18th

Renowned keyboardist Andrew North has a new single out and it’s a banger. ‘The Crocodile’ is the latest in a series of monthly releases landing on the 18th of each month. “It’s been so much fun putting these together” says North. “I just came off of working on an album with my band (2021’s ‘Phosphorescent Snack’ from Andrew North & The Rangers) and I’ve been so excited to get some of these new ideas together.” 

North is busy leading his band, playing live all around New England, but he also finds time to add to his extensive solo catalogue. “I love how fast I can move when I’m working alone. Collaboration is essential to me, but I really enjoy having a space where I can just chase after new ideas.”

‘The Crocodile’ features shimmering electric pianos and layered textures under lyrics that poke at anxiety underlying everyday life - “It’s easy to believe when you’ve been there before. You look into her eyes and wonder whether she wanted more…” The bones of a solid pop song expand into a crescendoing solo section, which is typical of North’s work. “I’m a jam band guy at heart. I try to avoid the clichés, but that influence is always there.”

Lost City spans 15 years, countless life changes, and one quarter-life crisis. Andrew started working on these songs in 2004 at age 20 with his college band, The Woodshed. He wrote “The Jungle” on school break while living in a one-room house near the beach in Rhode Island. In 2007, the band broke up and Andrew, having not caught his big break in the music world, took some time away from songwriting and playing. Writing “Braggadocio” was his only creative outlet during 3 hermetic years in law school in rural Vermont. 

The themes of the album began to emerge when Andrew saw the light and came back to music in 2016. He started writing new songs and playing coffee shop open mics. “Go North” and “Thing About the Woods” both came from this time, and both reflect themes of wanderlust, regret, and coming to terms with moving forward, even if you love the past you had to leave. 

With a little new confidence and a good batch of songs, Andrew enlisted former bandmate Pete Casselman (drums) and they hit the studio in Burlington, VT. They put in 3 days of free wheeling sessions in 2017, making room for spontaneous moments and letting the songs grow organically. Andrew spent the next year tracking the vocals and polishing the rough tracks. The end result is a little paradoxical - 15 years of music in about 30 minutes.
