Program notes: "Angst" explores the concept of emotional turmoil or "angst" through the use of tritones, dissonance and distortion effects on the electric guitar. The piece begins with the statement of a tone row, or a series of four notes that recur throughout the piece. As the piece progresses, both piano and electric guitar build in dissonance and tension, supporting and playing off of each other before launching into an '80s-influenced groove built on the tone row that represents the release of angst.

Set against the backdrop of a frosty piano texture, “February” follows a woman who journeys from wondering but troubled uncertainty to peaceful trust in the changing scenes of February.

“February” is a song I wrote in February 2018 as I was looking forward to an unknown future and dealing with the feelings and uncertainty that come with that. The song focuses on nature and the beauty that the singer sees in a changing landscape. Yet the beauty does not help the singer cope with what’s going on internally. Later on in the song, a dialogue takes place between the singer and God (with words taken from the Bible), who reassures the singer and invites them to cast their cares on Him. In response, the singer says, “With open hands and trusting heart / Submitting to your purifying art / At last at peace and warm in your sanctuary / I wait through the lengthy days of February.” For anyone facing uncertainty, the big “what’s next” or grappling with anxiety, I dedicate this song to you. I hope it’s a blessing and an encouragement.

Andrey Stolyarov is a Russian-born American composer, conductor, singer, and educator. His compositions have been performed nationally and internationally, with recent commissions by CONCORA, the Young New Yorker's Chorus, the Bassless Trio, and the Alturas Duo. He has studied with a variety of renowned composers, including Steven Sametz, Paul Salerni, Gilda Lyons, Robert Carl, David Macbride, Ken Steen, Larry Alan Smith, Ofer Ben-Amots, Jan Jirasek, Steven Stucky, Tania León, and Aaron Kernis. Andrey is Director of Music at West Avon Congregational Church in Avon, CT and Co-director of The Hartford New Music Festival. He is an adjunct music theory professor at The Hartt School, and is a private vocal instructor. He is an active professional singer currently performing with Voce, CONCORA, and the Composers' Choir. Andrey received his D.M.A. and M.M. degrees in music composition from The Hartt School, and his B.A. in music from Lehigh University.
